What do you do when your baby has diaper rash? I stopped using cloth diapers for a while because her rash was getting really bad and I needed to use a strong rash cream. It seems to be all cleared up now, but I am worried about my cloth diapers now. I really like putting a layer of lanolin and then vaseline on her butt after every diaper change (and they use desitin on her at daycare, ) but with the cloth diapers I cant really use vaseline. I have been using earth mama angel baby bottom balm but I don't think it creates enough of a barrier for her bottom.
Basically I am a bit disenchanted with my cloth diapers now after this rash episode. And I used to love them before. I started using liners, but I dont think the liners were really stopping the vaseline and lanolin from getting on to the diapers.

Is just the lanolin not sufficient? Do you think the is allergic to te cloth diapers?
Have you tried/heard of CJ's Butt butter? That stuff is amazing and smells great or there is an unscented one if your LO can't handle fragrance. Kissed by the Moon sells little sample sizes so you can try out a lot of the smells!

The vaseline just acts as an extra barrier to all the moisture. Well we used cloth diapers for about 4 months and she never had a reaction to them. I think the rash started becausethey dont let her dry at daycare before puttingon a new diaper and then once she had the rash it was really hard to get rid of with the cloth diapers

Are you sure the diaper rash was caused by the diapers? My son would get rashes for a variety of reasons and never once were they due to his cloth diapers. He would get them from teething, antibiotics, diarrhea, etc. Every once in awhile the cloth safe cream wasn't quite enough and we'd use sposies and Dr Smith's until it cleared up and went right back to our cloth without issue.

@pelikila: No I dont know for sure that they were caused by the diapers. I just know that once she got the rash, the cloth diapers didnt helpt at all since I couldnt use strong rash cream with them. I also sometimes worry that the diapers were repelling because of he earth mama angel bottom balm

Just a reminder, if you have a rash that's bad enough to switch to sposies, you should disinfect all of your cloth before using them again. Whatever contributed to the rash (or making it worse) is still on there. It's a good precaution to take. We just did this and LO's bottom looks much, much better! We're still searching for that perfect cloth friendly cream, though.

We use coconut oil as a diaper cream and it has been great. Haven't had any problems with rash though so I can't speak to that.

I second the CJ's recommendation. What type of cloth do you use? What kind of detergent? It could be possible that you have detergent build-up and that's causing the irritation. Another possibility is that the liner could be the culprit. Also, teething or certain foods could be causing the rash.
If you want LO to feel more dry inside the diaper, you can lay a strip of stay-dry fabric like fleece on top of the cotton.
