Are you more of a quantity or quality type when it comes to clothing?
The older I get, the more I'm trying to reduce clutter and buy more "forever" pieces that are higher quality, but I'm a bargain hunter at heart!

I think it depends on what I'm buying the clothing for. Classic pieces that I'll wear awhile like black sweaters or suits, I'll splurge and buy nice quality. But for trendier pieces, I don't mind buying cheaper.

@mungbean Agree! It's much easier to pull the trigger on trendy stuff when it's cheaper. Thank goodness for Forever 21 and H&M. Although both of those store just about send me into a panic attack!
Also, I have a big problem spending money on clothes for some reason. I always hesitate and waffle in the store and just walk out empty handed.

I'm like @MungBean: too. There was a period where I was trying to de-clutter and stick to "classic, quality, timeless" pieces. But I realized that I personally LOVE trendy and fun fashion pieces. So even though I might spend $100+ on something high quality and classic, it's ultimate "cost per wear" was so much more than something fun that I'd get a ton of wear from.
I love places like Forever 21 and H&M and learned to embrace it. My main trick to make them look and last like quality pieces is to always wash on cold, hang dry, and iron OR dry-clean! Also, a critical eye on workmanship before you buy it! I've had things from bargain stores that look great YEARS later!

I'm a quality type for clothing and accessories for me but I'm quantity for LO! I love beautifully made things, but I figure my LO will outgrow her clothing before she wears them out.

I prefer quality for most things . . . but for some basic staples (like tanks) and some accessories (on-trend jewelry) I don't go all out for.

I have three categories: staples, basics and trendy. My staples are investments pieces, things that I will own and wear for years, good boots, pencil skirts, sweaters. My basics are well-made items that will get a lot of use and probably won't last as long but will get their money's worth, button-downs, tshirts, tanks. The trendy pieces are items that I find on sale or at Forever 21/H&M that I know I won't have for long so I don't spend the money on them.

I buy used, so I can get name brand clothes for a fraction of the price. I guess that would be quality...since they are great pieces.

Oh, and a couple areas I never scrimp on - bags and shoes! A quality bag and pair of shoes can really elevate an ensemb!

If it's basics, like tank tops, t-shirts, etc, (things that only last 1 season) I'll go cheap. But if it's staples (work pants, blazers, coats, jeans, sweaters, etc) or handbags or shoes I buy quality stuff.

Mostly quality; especially on work clothes. I don’t like spending money on clothes in general though, and I love thrift/consignment shops. I get tons of great clothes at thrift shops – J.Crew, Anthropologie, etc. for cheap, cheap, cheap!
pomegranate / 3716 posts
I can't make myself pull the trigger on expensive clothes The best I do is Banana Republic or JCrew, but always on sale...

Depends on the situation, work is quality (skirts, suits, dresses, shirts) and for social I go quantity, and buy cute cheap shirts that usualy dont' last more than a few wears but that's all I wear them anyways!
pomegranate / 3008 posts
Always quality. I shop for myself once a year so I need everything to be classic, multifunctional, and high quality.
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
Definitely quality. They wear better, hands down. Something trendy, like an orange belt, though, I'll go cheap on. But things like jeans, dresses, and blouses? Nope. I try to buy them on sale, but if not, oh well.

Once upon a time, I would have said both! Expensive, lovely pieces, whenever the urge took me. These days it's more like neither!!! My wardrobe is a disaster zone!
bananas / 9973 posts
@MsLipGloss: Oh definitely agree! I don't like to scrimp on shoes or purses! Those are quality, investment pieces!

I'm slowly starting to grow into quality.
I've always said I prefer quality but the truth is I love quantity. I would much rather have a closet chock full of clothes I love that might only last me five years than just a small chest of clothes that will last forever. I get bored SO easily with my wardrobe and am constantly cleaning out my closet (few times a year) that although I like those staple, quality pieces, truth is if my whole wardrobe was just that, I would go crazy. I definitely wouldn't be able to shop as often as I feel the urge!!
That being said - there are some things I am definitely willing to spend more money on IF I LOVE it. And I mean I have to LOVE it. I have to feel like a million bucks, it must be adorable and comfortable. I will pay $100+ for jeans, boots, or a really nice dress.

I am a shop on the clearance rack sort of gal. I can't stomach paying full retail price, although I do appreciate good quality pieces that are well made. Still wont pay full price though

@Mrs. Pen: I agree 100% with everything you said!
I love having a closet full of clothes to choose from. I go through phases with clothes, and stuff I like now may not be my style 6 months from now. That being said, I bargain hunt a lot and my local consignment/secondhand shop is my best friend. I manage to get a lot of high quality items for less money, so I can have quality and quantity!
I definitely spend more on dresses for special events, shoes, purses and jeans.
cantaloupe / 6610 posts
Quality over quantity...But still a healthy mix of both! I love Bcbg, bebe, true religion, etc...But I have stuff mixed in from express and less expensive stores like that. I can't do the super cheap stores like forever 21 bc I cannot stand to shop in a hot mess and I feel like that's what those cheap big box stores are. It's too much!!!

I like to spend more on shoes and purses, and then buy cheaper tops and bottoms. I especially go cheap if its something super trendy and will probably not wear for very long.
pomegranate / 3329 posts
Quality, but I bargain hunt for specific brands. I can't bring myself to pay full price.
@PrincessBaby: I absolutely agree! Those stores give me a panic attack!
I love to go to garage sales in high end neighborhoods, I find the best pieces for cheap! I need to try consignment shops more often.
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
Both! For things I wear to work or special events, I buy less but better. For things that I will only wear a season, I buy cheaper, but still of decent quality. I can't bear to have IKEA in my home or H&M in my wardrobe. I just haven't had good experiences with the stuff I've gotten from those brands.
papaya / 10560 posts
Quality but often quality sale or outlet shop. I still shop F21, hm, target for staples like tanks and tees.
pomegranate / 3729 posts
Quantity. I am so cheap when it comes to clothes, especially now as a SAHM. I would much rather go to Forever 21 and get a few new fun things for the price I would pay for one new quality piece. But, I haven't shopped in ages...not really in the budget right now and I have tons of clothes as it is:)
pomegranate / 3580 posts
@princessbaby Me too! F21 almost sends me into a panic attack! It's just too crazy in there. Plus, I'm tall and all the dresses look like t-shirts on me - lol!
@Mrs. Pen: OMG, I totally agree - well said! The idea of investment pieces sounds good, but I know I'd get bored
eggplant / 11287 posts
I like both!!!
I like to have a lot of clothes but I also like them to be of good quality. I shop at h and m and other inexpensive stores for pieces I know I will only wear once (like to a wedding) but for the most part I shop mainly at nordstrom.
eggplant / 11287 posts
@PrincessBaby: forever 21 is SUCH a hot mess! You're right.
I know nordstrom is much more expensive but it is so nice that I don't have to search thru millions of racks to find something I like. I like everything I see!
