I teach as an adjunct at a university. We have a food pantry for students and staff. There was a food drive for holiday meal boxes for Thanksgiving and a coat drive too now that the weather has gotten colder. I'm so glad these resources are available for those who need them!

I don't think my college had one. I'm going to investigate, maybe the alumni association can get one going!

A local university started one, and I talked to some colleagues who work there. They said it's been hugely successful and the honor system has really been working.
I think it's even more important there because the college is known for the number of super wealthy kids who go there...so those that aren't rich who are there on scholarship would often hide how needy they really were. The food pantry has gotten bags from Whole Foods so the students in need won't stick out as students in need when they carry food to their dorms.
We don't have one at the university where I work, but I know there are other services helping them. And an office asked the faculty and staff "community" committee for donations of clothes appropriate for interviews when they found out some students couldn't afford suits. So they're building a closet library students will be able to borrow from.

I think it's a needed resource. It would have been helpful to me when I was a student. I was only able to attend due to earning two scholarships that together paid all my tuition. I still had to work and borrow to pay room, board, and personal expenses. It was hard to pull off since my half of my tuition scholarship required a weekly time commitment running the community service program. My fellow students went out to eat often, and I couldn't afford to join them. If I missed dining hall hours, I was out of luck. It's hard being a poor student.
@MaryM: I remember borrowing a too-big suit from a friend, so that's a great idea to maintain a clothing closet for borrowing.

I think this is awesome! I was fortunate enough not to need this service, but I know quite a few people who would have greatly benefitted from a pantry. Our dining hall hours were pretty restricted since I went to a small school, and it was hard for working students to make sure they got fed.
My college did have a "free store" where people could drop off unwanted clothes, shoes, books, movies, etc and any student could go in and take what they wanted.

When I was in college (ten years ago) my grocery and sundries budget was 100/month. It was manageable, but barely. This would have been a good safety net.
