Costco AMEX will now be Costco Citi Visa

If you have a Costco Amex, do you plan to open another Amex account to keep your Amex benefits? It looks like from this article, Citi Visa will send you a new card that will replace your Costco Amex card.

They say this should be seemless and shouldn't affect your credit.

I think I might want to open a AMEX card because of the great benefits. Though, I have to see if there are any annual fees in a new AMEX. I did like not having to worry about annual fees because there were no fees if I renewed my Costco membership each year.

We travel a lot, and have the spg Amex. We love it! We get 4-5 free hotel nights a year in addition to all the regular Amex perks.

I have an spg Amex also. I love it too! I hadn't heard about Costco changing its credit card affiliation. Do you know if Costco will still be accepting Amex? If not, I won't be inclined to open a Citi Visa. I'll just have to be a cash customer at Costco then.

@agold: You will get the Costco rebate check through the Citi Visa card, I believe.

From the article...
"If you frequently shop at Costco, waiting to receive the new Citi card may be your best bet. On this card, you’ll earn the same rewards as you would with TrueEarnings Card from Costco and American Express, according to Costco’s SEC filing. And because it’s a Visa, you’ll also be able to use it in more places."

"AmEx is not able to automatically convert TrueEarnings Card from Costco and American Express customers to other AmEx cards with the same card number, American Express spokeswoman Elizabeth Crosta writes in an email."

"If you don’t shop at Costco frequently but want to keep using an American Express card, it might make sense to cancel your TrueEarnings Card from Costco and American Express and apply for one of these offers — that is, after you’ve spent your annual TrueEarnings reward coupon, which is due to be paid out in February. But keep in mind that if you already have a proprietary AmEx card, you might not be eligible for a sign-up bonus on a new one."

@bluestriped bee: I think I get my rebate through my costco membership - not through a credit card. Because right now my credit card isn't linked to my costco account. I just pay extra for some type of membership that gives me a small percentage of my annual spending back in a check each year. I don't shop enough at costco to have a credit card linked there. Although.. i do get all my gas there, so that would have been nice.

We always had to use our debit card at Costco, I'm so excited we'll be able to use Visa there now. Though maybe I should be worried at how much more we'll spend, lol.

@agold: Oh, I have the AMEX Costco card and I get my rewards check attached to my AMEX statement. I got it in Feb.

So will costco take anything other than that Visa card? Or can I use my Citi Mastercard? I don't think any of my credit cards are actually visas... I have Amex and Mastercards.

@psw27: I think they will take only Visa instead of the Amex starting in April. You could use mastercard if you use it as a debit card, I think.

From their website-

"We welcome cash*, checks*, debit/ATM cards, Costco Cash Cards, Costco Credit Cards, EBT* and American Express Cards."

@bluestriped bee: Argh. That is so annoying! I don't like to use my debit card at stores because it got stolen once and someone charged a whole kitchen of new appliances and it caused this chain reaction of terror... I guess I can use my Banana Republic Visa at Costco, free clothes here I come ha!

When you begin using your new card on June 20, 2016, all purchases you make with your new card will earn Costco Cash Rewards! You will earn:

4% cash back on eligible gas worldwide, including gas at Costco, for the first $7,000 per year and then 1% thereafter

3% cash back on restaurant and eligible travel purchases worldwide

2% cash back on all other purchases from Costco and Costco.com

1% cash back on all other purchases

Apparently most of these are almost 1% higher than the rewards from the Amex.

@travellingbee: No I think they are mailing in May and you can use them starting June 20. I think they had a delay in the roll out.

I signed up for the Blue Cash Everyday Amex cc a few months ago. No annual fee and nice cash back perks.

@Miss Ariel: I was at Costco on Saturday and saw that they will be taking AMEX until June 19th. So does that mean they pushed back the date?

I'm just glad they will be taking visa now. We have one card we use for everything, so it's nice to finally be able to use it there.
