@LindsayInNY: That sucks hon. I am so so sorry you are dealing with this!

@HappyGal: @MrsF: @MsLipGloss: It really just surprises me that only "routine/normal" things are included in maternity care but not complications. It's not like any complication can usually be helped either! The bills aren't super expensive, thankfully, but sometimes it's just the principle of things, I guess.

@LindsayInNY: I had 2 (emergency) L&D visits for pre-term labor (22 weeks) and an amniotic fluid leak (30 weeks, and then induced at 38 weeks) . . . I had to fight for those to be covered too. *shakeshead*

@LindsayInNY: I know it's not super expensive, but just know medical bills can usually be negotiated down (since private payer rates are much higher than insurance contract rates). It may not be worth the hassle now, but it's good to keep in mind if you ever have a pricey bill.

@MsLipGloss: See! That's exactly what I mean! Those are CLEARLY related to maternity care. You can't be in the hospital for either of them unless you're pregnant! I don't understand how they can NOT be covered! I just don't get it! (Woah, holy exclamation points...)

@NorCalWayfarer: I think in total it's "only" $75 but I could spend that money on a lot of other things! I figure it couldn't hurt to try with the insurance. Otherwise, I might call the lab company and see if they can at least knock down the $50 bill? DH was hospitalized a couple years ago and I wish I had negotiated those bills. I only requested payment plans at the time.

@LindsayInNY: Let the punctuation fly! And yeah, those were totally /facepalm moments when I got the EOBs. I wonder if mitakes like that would happen if real live people were reading the code sheets!

I'm sorry you have to deal with this. I've sort of been dealing with the same thing. We just got a bill from the hospital I had my D&C at back in July. It doesn't make sense to me though, since I already paid the $300 copay on the day of. Plus, we finally just got the bill for my ER visit the day after the D&C. DH is dealing with it, because I just don't want the reminders.

@LindsayInNY: That is insane. I can't believe that's not covered. So sorry you're having to deal with BS like that during a difficult time!

@gingerk: Oh man. I think that's the only thing I'm thankful for - that I didn't have any hospital costs or anything real extensive? @NorCalWayfarer: suggested negotiating the costs. Might be worth having DH look into that? Or have him call your insurance company to find out the reasoning for the bills? ((hugs)) I'm sorry.

@Mrs. Blue: I'm trying to argue that the first appointment.blood work was "normal and routine" since we didn't expect there was any problem at that time. It's just bs about the whole "complications" rationale. Makes no sense to me!

@LindsayInNY: I'll have to talk to him about that.

I am stunned by this! That is ridiculous that so many people are having issues with this being covered. I have a family member who has had similar issues with insurance not covering her m/c.

Not counting doctor appts pre-miscarriage, we had to pay over $1,500 out of pocket (high deductible plan) for my miscarriage (D&C). It was definitely the worst slap in the face to have to pay for a baby that isn't.

@runnerd: Your insurance didn't cover any of it as maternity care? =/
