Could you foster a dog/cat? I could NOT, the puppy/kitty would never leave our house.

I've never heard of this? Is this like temporarily adopting an animal?
I think I could do it, but I would like the option to keep the pet kept on the table.

NOPE. MY house would be sort of like the Willy Wonka Factory for the adoptees . . . . all of them coming in, but none of them going back out! In a previous life . . . or maybe in the next . . . I just know that I was/am going to be a *crazy cat lady*!

@pui: Yes, temporarily taking care of the pet until they find there forever home. My neighbor fosters kittens.

@MsLipGloss: I'm your awesome step sister then because I'm the same way with dogs. I can't say no to a puppy's face.

Nope not with kids. I think they would get way too attached! Maybe down the road when the kids are gone - that would be fun!

@littlek: I have never had a puppy! Hubs and I really want BabyGloss to have a dog though (we have 2 kitties that she just adores!), so I am so excited for when that time comes!

@MsLipGloss: We have 2 dogs and B is OBSESSED with them. When they come in the room, B stops, waves and says "hi Pedro/Templeton" and then chases them...

We have! We fostered boston terriers for BTRNC after we adopted our first boston. We "failed" fostering on our girl Thumper but we successfully found homes for 6 other dogs that we fostered over the course of a few years.

@mediagirl: You are a better person than me... I could never let them go.. I'm a dog hoarder

@littlek: I usually hear LO whisper/say *tit tat* when the kitties come into her view. I would love to hear B's little voice say *hi* to his pup pups!

I have in the past, it's how we have 2/3 of our cats- my failure rate is too high to do it very often these days.

Nope......I am just not a pet person at all. DH wants a dog but as long as he travels it isn't happening.
DH is highly allergic to cats.

i would foster a dog (i'm allergic to cats) but since i have so many restrictions it's probably not feasible for me to do so--we have 2 dogs, one of which can be skittish/aggressive, we have a small place and both WOH so no active or big dogs, etc. basically we would need a mellow, small to medium lap dog. and if we fostered one of those, i would end up adopting it.

We do it all the time! We've had many litters of bottle fed kittens and we had a litter of puppies over Christmas last year. We have only had one foster failure (as in we adopted her) so I think we're doing okay. I would do adult cats and dogs but our current animals don't handle that as well.

Nope. I'd just end up adopting it! My friend did this with a dog... she cried and cried when it got adopted.

@littlek: I fostered kittens once and unfortunately it will be the last time for a while... I had them in my office and they destroyed the furniture (my beautiful leather office chair!) and the book cases have tons of little kitten claw marks on the bottom few inches. It is a cute memory (and they were sooooooo freaking adorable) but I remember thinking "never again" - the worst part was interviewing people and having people in and out of our home. I still support the humane society in other ways but unfortunately my two furbabies are good enough right now

I would. This is something DH and I talk about doing after we buy a house.

We have in the past and of course it ended up staying with us forever He was a perfect fit for us so it worked out great. Have fostered others and successfully found them forever homes. It is bittersweet, but very rewarding in the end. Fostering really helps them get adopted because they have time to adapt to "home" life and their personalities come out more than they would in the kennel.
I say do it if you can!!

Cats never.
Dogs:
Pre-baby my answer would be no because I wouldn't be able to give the dog up when it was finally adopted.
Post-baby that excuse still stands, but also I just don't have the time!

I've fostered both cats and dogs before - but they're only short term. Like, less than a week usually.

Allergic to cats, so no. Dogs? Hell yes!
I think it's a win-win for DH and I. He's not quite the rabid dog lover that I am, but can tolerate them for defined periods of time. {Sadly, "lifetime" does not consitute a defined period for him.}

No. We already have three cats, and that's one too many for us, and D would get super attached.

I wish I could, but I know that we would keep them all. I would want to and DH would be worse. I think he would be a borderline animal hoarder if I didn't keep him in check.

Yes, we have fostered 4x. We have a greyhound (see my profile pic!) and are obsessed with breed in general. So we have fostered Quasar (3 weeks), Buster (1 month), Sid (2+ months) and Ruby (1 week) until they found their forever homes. We work with a greyhound rescue. Both Buster and Sid were SUUUPER high needs and had major separation anxiety. Sid was the hardest - he tore up our place regularly and had accidents almost every day for the first month (and not just pee...). We were pretty distressed and had to give him back to the greyhound org before he found his forever home. We were sad because our greyhound loved him, and he was so sweet when we were home. We might have adopted him if his separation anxiety hadn't been such a huge issue! I haven't been able to foster after that experience because it was so hard. DH has been pushing for us to foster again though!
