Crafty bees, quick question!

If you buy fabric at hobby lobby and it has white strings tied around it does that mean it is a full bolt?

My sister and I made PJ pants for our family this weekend and the lady pulled 2 cut-pieces off the bolt and then got to white tied strings and said this is a full bolt and looked at the end and said its 15 yards, which was slightly more than we needed so we're like ok perfect we'll take it all. Well we didn't have enough fabric so I'm just wondering if I don't understand how fabric is labeled or if I got screwed.

My assumption is 15 yards on a bolt and 44" wide I should get a piece of fabric 540"x44"?

Did she read you the end of the bolt or did she measure it off the bolt?

I've ALWAYS had it measured off the bolt and they usually just throw it in for me. I've never noticed if it's stringy at the ends or whatnot, though...but I've often taken the last strips off the bolt

And yeah, 15 yards on a 44" bolt should be 540x44"

eta: did you cut into ALL the fabric or do you have like, an edge that you can determine how much you actually were given?

She should have measured it all out and rerolled it. There's no way of knowing if anything was cut off the bolt before she handed it to you.

I would call the store and speak with a manager if you have the selvage edge (usually the white long side with maybe the brand of fabric or little color dots) they could measure that to see how much they actually gave you.

@blackbird: @Chillybear: she didn't measure it and I didn't know enough to ask her to. She just said oh white strings this means it's a full bolt and looked at the end where it says 15 yards. And we used it all for pj's it was flannel and we didn't cut off the selvage just hemmed it on the legs. Boo, I thought that's what happened bc I couldn't account for more than 9 yards. My husband's like you used a 40% off coupon so you only got 40% of the fabric you asked for

@jetsa: That's too bad, they should always measure the bolt. I think you may have gotten taken advantage of! Lesson learned for next time. And I'm sure if you say something to the manager, they might work something out with you. Never hurts to ask.

@jetsa: Yeah no she made a mistake. And you got charged for the whole thing, I'm sure! and 15 yards of fabric is not cheap!

What did you get to make out of them? Maybe you made just the pants and you can make t-shirts in a solid color or something

She definitely made a mistake, and this is one of the many reasons that I don't buy fabric from Hobby Lobby anymore. She should have measured and re-rolled it so you would know exactly how much you were getting and get charged for the amount of fabric that was there.

I'm sorry that happened.

@blackbird: We were just making pants and a crib sheet and they're almost done! We had enough to make most of the pants for the girls and my sister ended up using all the scraps to make her pair so that we had just enough bc we bought 5 yards of extra fabric in a different color and we are going to use that for the boys pants.

@jetsa: Do you have a Hancock Fabrics or Joann Fabrics near you? They are usually much, much better about cutting, measuring, and accurately pricing your items, and a lot of the people who work there are knowledgeable about fabric (at least at mine).

@avivoca: yea we have a Joann's. We went to hobby lobby bc christmas fabric was 1/2 off and then we didn't even buy christmas

@avivoca: @blackbird: @GreeneB2: @Chillybear: I called hobby lobby and the manager was really concerned about what happened and talked to the lady in fabric and they are going to replace the 5 yards even though we don't have proof. I am thoroughly surprised, I just wanted to tell them so it didn't happen to someone else.

@jetsa: Oh great! I've had good success at Hobby Lobby (I bought our sheet fabric there and have bought lots of fabric, but i always watch them do it, too!). But yeah if i have in depth questions about what i'm making, what kind of fabric and thread to use, etc, i have to go somewhere else.

Also, i totally have some pajama pants in that red plaid fabric. I've had them for over 10 years now
