We transitioned to a toddler rail on his crib at around 19 months and we're actually about to transition him to a twin bed (with a toddler rail) at nearly 25 months. We transitioned the first time because he was climbing out of his crib - or rather trying to and getting stuck and wailing like a banshee. We're transitioning to the bigger bed because we need his crib (put back together, no toddler rail) for little sister.

And in case you were wondering, she has a crib but it's a drop down crib and it's on wheels. I'd rather she were in something more solidly put together since she's about as big as he is and we think he's ready for a bigger bed. He loves sleeping in ours!

We transitioned LO from crib to floor bed at 15 months bc LO#2 is set to arrive when she's 18/19 months. I wanted to disassociate LO from the crib early so that it wouldn't be like it was being taken over by the baby. I very much considered buying a 2nd crib bc she slept soooo well in it, but ultimately decided to make the change. LO does ok with change overall so I figured after a few tough nights the transition would be done and over with. Her first night, she slept 12 hours (as usual) so it was no biggie!

We use a twin mattress on the floor with "magic bumpers" along one side so she doesn't roll out (they're on amazon). Eventually we'll use the box spring and/or a nicer bed frame, and maybe a rail if she needs it, but for now the bumpers work well. She can climb in and out herself. I check on her midway through the night and half of the time, she is sleeping sideways on the mattress, haha. I was initially worried she would wake up in the middle of the night and try to leave her room, but when she does wake up, she just sits in her bed and whines/cries until we go to her.

If I weren't expecting LO#2, I would have kept her in the crib until ~18 months or so and then would've done the toddler rail conversion. This way she would be on the same transition schedule in terms of using the floor cot at daycare for naps. I probably wouldn't have even considered the twin mattress and would've just left it in the guest room.

You know, I haven't really thought about making the switch yet. My son is currently 18 months, and we just found out we are expecting another. I like the idea of making the transition before the new baby arrives to avoid any feelings of jealously. His crib converts to a toddler bed, so either way, we will be buying a new crib. I'll probably transition him over the summer.

@LemonLong: bumping an old thread. i'm thinking more and more about transitioning LO to a bed since we're expecting in Aug. There haven't been any issues since the transition? I feel like LO might be ready sooner than later (16 months next week). i think i remember you did moms on call too. my LO has been a pretty consistent sleeper since 8 weeks old so i think she can handle it... and she sleeps on a mat at daycare so she can sleep without a crib. i'm just too scared to do it! hah any regrets?? or should i just go for it?

We just talked about that with our ped at our 2 year well visit, and he said keep LO in the crib until he's 3... because he doesn't have the mental ability to understand he needs to stay in bed yet. I am very glad he hasn't tried climbing out and we are still in the crib. We are 25 months

My almost 2 year old is in her crib still and very happy there. I think we'll probably transition her over the summer though b/c life gets a little less hectic for us then when I'm not teaching. I try to keep big transitions to a minimum during the school year unless there's a really compelling reason.

@LemonLong: thanks! alright we might try it soon then. i'm sure its more stressful for me than her!
