I didnt even know you could get dairy free and soy free formula. So I will be watching this thread

My son is on Nutramigen - it's a pre-digested formula (like Elecare and Neocate) but is not AS pre-digested. It works well for many babies who have MSPI. My son has been on it since 4 months (at that time he got 50/50 breastmilk and formula) and has been on it exclusively since 4.5 months (when he wsa still having a little bloody stool on my breastmilk). He's responded quite well.

It's expensive, but not as expensive as Elecare/Neocate. Also check with your insurance about whether it is covered under your policy. Supposedly ours is (though I'm still fighting to get an actual check).

Once opened, it is only good for one month...

@TurtleDoves: You can buy Nutramigen over the counter. We have a prescreiption for it (so that it can be covered under insurance). But, I primarily order mine on diapers.com.

@TurtleDoves: : ). I also have gotten nutramigen at target and cvs- it's just with the other formulas! Remember dairy stays in your system a few weeks. Totally sucks!

We had to do Neocate. It is an amino acid based formula. We started formula at 9 months old BUT we are mostly breastfed even now at 18 months old. The Neocate was so expensive and he started refusing it at about 10 months old (and refused anything in a bottle) (I looked but I didn't find any extra unopened cans even though I don't think we used it all). After he turn 1 he has been on Neocate Splash which is another amino acid based milk like drink. We need it for the extra fats (he's so tiny). It is $5 for 8 oz so we keep the breastfeeding up (he gets that at daycare). We haven't had a problem with pumping or having milk available to him even when I worked full time. It's nice at around 6 months he really extended feedings and he could have solids instead of milk.

I agree with others that neocate and elocare works for some kids. I am just so scared to even think about going back to what we had. We have been trialing dairy and soy and I had a large amount this past weekend. He had the hardest time trying to poop today. He was up most of last night in pain again (he doesn't scream anymore but he doesn't sleep). And today he kept telling me "poop poop" and he would strain and fart. It was so difficult for me to watch.

If I locate a can I'll let you know.

Note, we plan to use the formula as a tax deduction. We will go over the minimum. But anything above regular formula price can be put be a medical deduction if you meet the level.
