D&C Questions

@2PeasinaPod: That is very interesting b/c I was told I had a D&C but it sounded more like a D&E! I asked how he was going to remove the sac and he said using a vacuum. I guess it must depend on how big the sac is too.

@erwoo: I thought so too! And when I went to my RE, she said she thought it was really odd that my old OB didn't think it was odd that I had such prolonged bleeding after a D&E rather than a D&C. When she did my surgery to remove the scar tissue, she found remnants of fossilized placenta left behind which was enough to convince me not to go back to my old OB now that I'm pregnant again.

@2PeasinaPod: Ugh, that sucks! Sorry you had to go through that. I only had heavy bleeding for the first few periods. I mentioned to my OB and he said that it's okay. I trusted him and went on having an uneventful pregnancy a year later with my first. And he also delivered my second. Congrats on your second pregnancy!

@Alivoo01: D&E (dilation & evacuation) or D&C (dilation & curettage, I believe the evac is a vaccuum, and the curettage is the scraping of the lining - I apologize for being so blunt.

As I said in the post, I didn't choose the method, I left it up to the doctor to do what he thought was best. I don't prefer either over the other.

Did any of you ladies experience passing clots post surgery? If so, what size and is this normal? Were there random days where bleeding seemed to be a big heavier/darker?

@Alivoo01: I don't remember clots except on the very first day, but the bleeding did tend to get heavier/lighter depending on activity etc. I just checked my fertility friend.. looks like it was Heavy, medium, spotting then went back to medium and back to spotting.

@Alivoo01: So sorry we're in the same stupid boat on this one.

I had mine on 3/6. It took about 2 weeks for the bleeding to completely stop. It was never extremely heavy but I did have some clots a couple times. (Like maybe up to the size of a quarter - is that way TMI??) My doctor said that was normal. She wanted me to call if I soaked a pad in an hour or if I felt woozy.

The bleeding definitely came and went. It started 2 days after the D & C and really didn't end for good until this past weekend (2 weeks post-op).

Hope you're doing OK! I've been thinking of you.

@Alivoo01: I passed one rather large (slightly bigger than a golf ball) clot about 4-5 days after D&C. I had really bad cramps right before but after I passed it I had no more bleeding or cramping.

For my first AF, I had tiny clots but nothing that was alarming. I just had a yearly visit with my Dr and we talked about it. She said its normal for the lining to take a cycle or two to get back to normal

@Alivoo01: I remember some very heavy bleeding turned light bleeding with possible some small clots. Are you passing large clots? Could you call the doc to see if it's ok?

@My Only Sunshine: Definitely not TMI because I passed one that size last night and that's what got me freaking out. I passed a couple nickel sized this morning. Thanks for sharing, and I'm sorry we're in this as well *hugs*

@HappyBluebird: holy cow. a golf ball size?! I'd definitely be freaking out. I passed a quarter size one last night (that already made me panic) and was crampy all day prior to passing it. I'm still bleeding this morning so hopefully it'll ease up and go away soon.

@littleveesmommy: I called this morning and the doctor said it could be normal and to be concerned/call back if I pass a golf ball size or bigger clot, soak through a pad for an hour, or run a fever. Hoping I don't experience any of these!

@Alivoo01: I did. Many. And many of them were painful. I had clots that were up to 2" in length. I ended up going to the hospital and they had to give me IV pain medication. That being said, I ended up having retained tissue (that they didn't detect on the u/s at the hospital) and it was a long process until I passed it naturally a few weeks later. The doc did tell me that clots were normal to pass as long as they were quarter sized or smaller.

@Alivoo01: Yeah it was scary in the moment! The Dr said sometimes you can have retained tissue. I've been told that soaking 1 pad in an hour is the rule to follow

@Alivoo01: To be honest, I didn't really pay close attention. I was more focused on being distracted with school and work and nursing my emotional needs at the time.

@Alivoo01: How is your bleeding now? I passed a few quarter sized clots. I bled for so long though which is what got me worried (6 weeks the first time and 8 weeks the second time)

@2PeasinaPod: The bleeding has stopped as of yesterday (11 days post D&C). I had to go to ER last week because I passed a golf ball size clot followed by quarter sized to half dollar sized clots for 10 minutes. It was crazy. The cramping was intense. There was no retained tissue so we have no idea what caused the clot passing marathon. They gave me the methergine shot and prescribed the pills afterwards. The shot was very effective, the pills not so much.

I have my 2 week follow up today.

Wanted to share my experience I had a D&E today at 11w. I had mine under general anesthesia and although I was very nervous about the surgery part it went smoothly. One part I was not prepared for was being asked by the nurses if we wanted the remains for burial or wanted the baby baptized. I am supposed to be on 4 weeks pelvic rest but no idea if I'll be allowed to ttc at that point.

@mamabolt: I am so sorry for your loss. After my D&C, I waited for my first natural AF (took six weeks) and started TTC right after that. I got pregnant the first cycle we tried and am now 29 weeks. Wishing you all the best in the future.

@mamabolt: I'm so sorry for your loss. *hugs* My OB told me to wait for 2 AF cycles before TTC to build up my lining, but from other's on here, it seems after 1 cycle was sufficient timing.

My doctor also told me to wait 2 cycles. I just had my first cycle start exactly 5 weeks after the procedure. To be honest, I'm not sure I'd be ready to TTC now anyway, so I don't mind waiting a little while longer.
