My NYC based clinic only does day 5 transfers now because of the increased success rates coupled with decreased multiple rates. But you have to have a top quality lab to grow the embryos to day 5.

Hhmm. I think the thinking is that with today's technology, the embryos can grow equally well to day 5 as in the womb. The advantage then for a day 5 transfer is that you can see which embryos have the genetic juice to make it that far. I would think you would have to transfer more day 3 embryos to achieve the success rates of a day 5 transfer.

My doctor only does day 5 transfers too. I was more comfortable with that over day 3. We lost 4 embryos between days 3 and 5 so I'm glad that's what we did.

I've definitely read that 3 can be just as good. I would go with whatever your RE recommends!

My RE does both day 3 and day 5 transfers. It just depends on how many embryos you have and how they're developing. I had a day 5 transfer. But my friend had a day 3 (on her 3rd IVF) and we both got s.

We did a day 5 transfer, just because that's pretty standard at my RE's office. However, the best ones on day 3 were still the best ones on day 5. Our two poorest quality embryos on day 3 didn't make it to day 5. That anecdotal evidence makes me think that our cycle would have been just as successful had we done a day 3 transfer.

Just wanted to add that since you mentioned on the IVF thread you are considering transferring one, then I think day 5 would be better since they can determine the best one better at that point. Just my two cents!

@tequiero21: @LMOG47: How was the quality for both embryos? Just curious! I'll be doing a Day 3 and transferring two next month. Just wondering if both of the embryos were high quality or not since I've been doing research the last few days on likelihood of twins with Day 3 vs. Day 5.

Yep, if the quality is really good, you probably would only increase your likelihood of twins, vs. having one. BUT, as you said, if it doesn't work, then you may regret not transferring two. That's the way we looked at it. We'd rather have two, then none. But since you have insurance, you could do it again rather quickly. Our is all out of pocket and super expensive so we were willing to take much more risk to get pregnant!

@Jenn23: they were great quality, but, I don't remember the actual "grade" they gave. I remember having 4 great quality embryos (transferred 2) and 3 additional good quality. The remaining 5 were frozen.
