I think there was a post about this sometime ago but at that time I wasnt aware my LO's daycare had fundraising sales> she just moved to the toddler room and they gave out christmas catalogues to the parents to raise funds. I dont really get it because its not a church daycare or a not for profit.
Does your daycare do this? do you take part?

Yes, I don't find it weird bc when they're school aged schools do this too. I always buy from co-workers with school aged kids so it's time for my come upings!

@locavore_mama: But most schools are public funded (unless you're referring to private schools?) so it's not like each parent is paying for their kid to go there and presumably the cost to attend covers all the expenses?
@Mrsbells: I don't know if my daycare does this or not, but I would also find it strange. It seems like if they really needed more money, wouldn't they just charge a little more for each kid? The only thing I know my daycare has done is have a list of needed supplies, but it's like random stuff you might have or could easily donate (like paper towel rolls).

I don't think our daycare does this and I would find it weird. We pay a lot of money to send him there, I'm not fundraising on top of that. FWIW, I don't like it when schools do it either.

Fundraisers are usually optional, I think?
Our daycare doesn't do a fundraiser, but sometimes a parent will reach out to the other parents and ask them if they want to contribute to purchase a needed item. I generally don't have a problem with it, especially if it's an item that the kids will use! Plus in our case, it's totally optional...

What is the daycare selling? My public school sold wrapping paper for holidays. Fundraising allows schools to provide activities or services otherwise not in the budget or helps them keep overall tuition costs lower. Would you rather pay a bit more instead of hawking wares? I know I probably just want to pay more especially now that I am sold on an assembled toy, no wrap Christmas gift presentation.

@Adira: good point. *shrugs* It doesn't really bother me because it's all optional. If I don't want to participate, I don't. I usually just throw it in the trash! LOL
@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: mine was selling chocolates, popcorn tubs, etc. Typical holiday school fundraiser goodies.

I would never participate in this. Working at an actual nonprofit school, I find it extremely distasteful that a for-profit institution would do it. As for public schools, well, I don't think they should be doing it either -- why should we be filling government shortfalls with chocolate sales? But I know that's hard because the schools and the kids really do need the money.... Andddd... that also wasn't the question LOL. Sorry.

Having switched from a for profit day care to tiny not for profit church day care, I'd be completely annoyed by fundraising. We paid a lot of money for the for profit center. They're making money. If the center needs things, that's what the money I'm already giving you is for.

@locavore_mama: Very true! It's all optional and depending on what they are using the funds for, I probably wouldn't participate either (unless they were selling something AWESOME, haha).

My friend's daycare does this--we all went to a trivia night that had booze and snacks. It was a once a year thing and a lot of fun. If it was often, that'd be annoying. It's how they got new toys or whatever for the babies.
E goes to an in-home, so we don't deal with this. But i often wonder if there's anything that would benefit the kiddos that I could donate!

@blackbird: I think I would participate in an event type fundraiser. But I wouldn't sell over priced wrapping paper and popcorn so the daycare could make some more money.

Yes it is optional they just gave out a catalogue of xmas type goodies like gift baskets, chocolate pretzels, special types of fudge as well as non edible xmas gifts. They asked us to try to sell as many as possible. there is a $100 tuition discount for whoever makes the most sales

LO goes to a church daycare, and in the month we've been there I've already seen three fundraiers...
I get that they need money, but I'd honestly rather pay more for tuition than feel guilty about whether or not LO participates in fundraisers. At least mine is a non profit, I think I'd have to laugh at them if it was a for profit daycare!

Our daycare does this and we just didn't participate. I'm looking forward to sending her to the private school that doesn't do fundraising.
Side bar - a friend of mine's kids just started school (Kindergarten) in August. She is already pimping out her FB friends to buy coupon books and to sponsor her school at Target. Drives me bonkers.

@blackbird: I hated fundraising with a passion. I participated in sports that seemed to always be fundraising and my Mom was forever forcing me to walk around the neighborhood hitting up the neighbors. I swear I'm still traumatized.

We haven't participated yet, but our daycare fundraisers go to charity. I know there is a scentsy one for Ronald McDonald House. There is also a cookie/pizza one for another charity. I don't mind that they do it, it's just been bad timing for us so far.

Our daycare does not do this. They have Parents Night Out where you pay $20 and they watch your child so you can go on a date or on a saturday around the holidays so you can go shopping. The money goes directly to the teachers though.

I work at a for-profit daycare center, and every spring we do fundraisers. I don't feel like it's right because people are paying a lot of money in tuition to send their children to the daycare, therefore it's the daycare administration's responsibility to see to it that the tuition money is used to cover expenses instead of relying on fundraiser money to buy new equipment, etc. Also, at my daycare, participating in the fundraiser is mandatory for employees, and if you don't sell anything (I usually don't) it gets added to our staff records. Parents who don't participate are usually nagged about their lack of sales. So yeah, I think it's tacky for a for-profit daycare to expect families to participate in a fundraiser.

yeah I also feed bad asking people to buy stuff, especially because they prices are so silly. its like $15 for small can of wafers or $20 for small bag of chocolate pretzels

@just_ju: That's ridiculous that parents are nagged for not selling. I'd like to see our daycare try to nag DH about not selling. Oooh, they'd get an earful.

Our daycare does this too and we don't participate. We pay a monthly tuition for them to cover things like supplies, gym equipment, etc. With as high of tuition and fees we pay, I am not so interested. But then again I do have other concerns with the way our daycare handles some money things, so I am biased:)

There's no way I would participate in this. Our daycare is for-profit, and we will pay a not insignificant amount for tuition. There's no way on top of that I'm going to annoy my friends and co-workers by trying to hock junk to them. And if anyone tried to nag me about it, it would be for sure the last time they dared say anything.

I think it's completely tacky for a for-profit daycare to be doing this. TBH, I don't purchase ANYTHING from fundraisers (except Girl Scout cookies, because... hey, they're friggin Girl Scout cookies!) and I won't be pestering any of my friends or family members with fundraising crap when my kid starts school. I'll probably just suck it up, buy a bunch of useless stuff myself, and call it a day.

I don't know much about daycare level, but school level (particularly elementary) is awful because of the prize catalog. It became a competition - Susie sold $700 WORTH of merch from her fundraiser and got the TOP prize in the booklet! You only got grandma to buy $20 worth, and got a plastic top? so embarrassing when the boxes came in. you know?
maybe I Just had a weird school with competitive kids
ETA** one of the only fundraisers I felt was awesome was when we sold Entertainment books in high school. We got 50% of what we sold toward our band trip. That added up fast!

I participate in fundraisers at our daycare but it is non profit. I probably wouldn't be as active if it was for profit.

I hated doing fundraisers in school, especially the one where we had to lug heavy boxes of candy home on the bus and sell it for music competitions. My husband and I were talking about it a few weeks ago because fundraisers really seem like projects for the parents and it's annoying, especially when every other parent in your office is doing the same thing. Our daycare is a for-profit, so I don't know if I'll participate or not or even if they do fundraising.

Our daycare is currently doing a Scholastic book fair as a fundraiser. It doesn't bother me because we're not required to hawk anything. If they increased the tuition they would probably lose kids and then it would be even more difficult to buy new playground equipment, toys, etc.

@Mrsbells: i was the one that started the thread a few weeks ago - my for-profit daycare does fundraisers. it was entertainment books then and we didn't participate. It was going towards playground equipment.
THEN today there was another friggin' fundraiser flyer in his cubby! Now they're selling candles. They also are offering 50% off tuition for a week for the top seller and a $100 credit to the 2nd top seller. For this one, they're using it to go towards toys.
They also do scholastic books throughout the year- which doesn't bother me at all.
