I hear that a lot from parents whose LO's start daycare. My 20-month old starts daycare on Monday and I'm seriously dreading this happening to her and me, especially since I'm starting a new job and it won't look good to take so many sick days.

Yup. At our 4 month pedi appointment she told us to expect our son to be sick every two weeks during the first winter, every three weeks the second winter and by the third winter he should be good. Um, its not winter yet and he has had two colds in the month that he has been in daycare! She then went on to list all the sicknesses to expect and holy cow. I am not looking forward to all that!

@regberadaisy: Yeah. After she saw the look of horror on my face she did tell me that he probably won't be sick that much but if you expect it and it doesn't happen, then you can be happy that you missed a week.

My stepson gets sick whenever he starts at a new daycare (during the summer) and when he starts up school in the fall. Ugh it's awful!!!!!! The poor child was sick from the age of 2-5 I swear! He's starting a new school this fall, so I know we're going to go through it all over again since it's new kids, new germs.

I usually get everything he has, I'm sick from the day he leaves us (he's with us every other weekend), until about 2 days before he comes back. I have 4 healthy days, and then back into the cycle. Last winter wasn't AS bad, but the year before was vicious for both of us! I hope I'm wrong about this year since I'm pregnant now and my immune system will be even lower A miserable pregnant lady AND grade school kid is a bad combo!!!

I have heard, and who knows if this holds true for all kids, that a kid will get sick most often the first year in a daycare or school setting. So hopefully after the first year in daycare it gets better, and the kiddo wont be as sick come kindergarten who didnt have the daycare exposure.

In my case, L O has been in daycare since may and has had two colds, but nothing bad enough to miss a day.

I think kids make each other sick, so whether it is a play group, day care or school, they're going to get sick. I also think that it doesn't matter to how much sickness you were exposed to before starting school because viruses mutate, so this years cold requires different immunities than the one from last year.

I hate the beginning of the school year because the parents who caught their kid's colds bring it to the office.
