my DH drops-off our LO at daycare and I pick him up...we share one car seat (DH will leave it at the daycare)...
i was thinking of getting a 2nd car seat so we could leave them in our cars (DS is getting heavy to carry while he is in the car seat) 
how do you guys handle this?

We leave the bucket seat at day care. LO is starting to get a little heavy in it.. but it's not a long walk from her room to the car so it's easily done. But once she transitions to a convertible seat we'll get one for each car.

We leave the carseat at daycare because we sometimes switch off who does drop off/pick up (but most of the time we ride together so it is a non issue). Both of our cars have matching bases that the seat can snap in to.
Once we upgrade to the convertible seat sometime in the next couple of months, we'll keep a seat in each car.

We do the same as you at the moment. Hubs drops off Xander (with car seat) and I pick him up. He's only 4 months so far, so not too heavy yet. I think we'll continue doing this though until he outgrows the car seat. Then I'm not sure what we'll do, though I've seen people leave their convertible seat at the daycare, so we might do that.
You could always bring your LO into the daycare and then go and get the car seat and bring it in. I would probably do that before buying another car seat. But I can be cheap sometimes and bringing in/out the car seat wouldn't seem like that big of a hassle to me.

We had two bases and we left our infant seat at daycare. We bought two convertibles when LO was older.

We had two bases when she was small enough to tote in the carseat. Now we have two car seats. It's too much to move the convertible seat each day.

We had one infant seat and two bases. We'd leave the infant seat at daycare. Now LO is in a convertible car seat, so we have two convertible car seats - one for each car.

I was just wondering this... DD is getting heavy! I drop off 100% and pick up 75%, and always leave the car seat at daycare because I don't know I can't pick up until later in the afternoon. I'll probably suck it up and use the infant car seat as long as possible. Like @Adira: I would sooner carry her and the car seat separately before buying a second one because I'm too cheap

@butterbean: Depending on how far of a walk to your LO's room in the daycare and the car, it might not be too bad. Just run in, grab the car seat, put it in your car, and then go get your LO.
Although... if it's raining, I could see this option as being annoying...

We have a convertible car seat for DH's truck and an infant seat in mine. If we hadn't been bought the convertible off our registry we would have gotten two bases and left the seat at daycare during the day.

Our daycare doesn't let us leave the seat there...so I bought a convertible seat already for DH's car. And I bought a convertible for my car already since I found a great deal.
