I feel ridiculous even typing this out, but my daughter started a new daycare 2 weeks ago, and we love it (as does she) but I keep getting hung up on the fact that they keep their rooms really cold. They have window unit ACs because it's an older building, and they're always at 68 degrees, and because they're window units, they blow air downward (windows are fairly low too) so the floor is ice cold. The teachers are in cardigans, but the kids are in their usual summer clothes and they're coming in and out sweaty after playtime all day and wet after water play and they sleep on cots that are not much higher than being on the floor. There's pretty much zero that I can do about it (right?), I'm just constantly freaked out that LO is going to be sick all the time. Didn't help that she just came down with a pretty crappy cold for a few days. I'm probably being "that" mom but if anyone has any thoughts/tips/etc, I'm all ears.

Being cold doesn't cause colds. If you are worried about her being uncomfortable after outside play/water activities maybe send an extra set of clothes or a cozy sweater and ask the carers to put it on her in them when she's inside? And to make sure she is always wearing socks when she's inside?

@ScarletBegonia: See, this is why I'm laughing at myself about this. When I was growing up, my mom drilled into me that cold = getting sick and I cannot get it out of my brain!

It is a bit of a worry though not in terms of sickness necessarily but just the kids comfort - i hate hate hate coming into an air conditioned environment after exercising, there's nothing worse that the cold sweaty feeling! -
Temp swings won't make your LO sick! It probably feels good
at least, I LOVE getting into an ice cold car if it's hot and sweaty

I'm sure it's fine but if you're concerned, send a sweatshirt and ask them to put it on LO if they get cold...

68 is cold!! Obviously the teachers are cold enough to want to put on a sweater. I would ask the school to bump it up to a more reasonable temp. That doesn't seem like a crazy request to me.

I would just tell them it seems pretty cold in the rooms and ask what they keep the temp at. I'd pack some layers and ask that they make sure LO doesn't get too cold.

Why don't you just casually joke/comment next time you go in? "Brr! How come it's always so cold in here? Hahaha".

You should mention it but also make sure to pack LO clothes to keep comfy.

Don't the kids have blankets when they sleep? Sounds nice to be in a chilly room all wrapped up in cozy blankets.

I'd ask about it, that seems quite cold for the summer and a lot of dry air.

I just read somewhere that a colder environs meant is better for infants sleeping against SIDS. Crazy but it is probably not a bAd thing. I also dress my baby in long sleeves and pants anyway because of the sun.

@brownie: I do know that but these are toddlers (2+). I'm guessing because they get warm being active they want to keep things cool but the rapid warm up/cool down seems drastic and I feel like it might make her more susceptible to getting sick (thought again, I think I mostly believe that for old wives tales reasons)

Ugh! I'm always cold at work and I wear long sleeves pretty much year round. (I even brought in a temperature gauge to make sure something wasn't wrong with me. haha) It would bug me, too, but I would ask my daughter (how old is she?) if she is ever cold? I would bring in cardigans so she could wear them if she got cold.
Maybe I might say something like 'Would it be possible to feel my daughters skin throughout the day to make sure she's not cold. I have a cardigan here that she could wear if she is cold." -
@Mrs. Carrot: ok yeah that's a bit rough. The cold weather makes people sick comes from germs like the flu living better in the wet cold air during winter. So recreating that environment could have a teeny chance to be harmful. But mostly I don't think anyone likes that kind of a change of weather shock. Poor kiddos.

@Mrs. Carrot: slippers for indoors! we had the same issue. i always sent her with an extra sweater and before i left I always told her she could put it on if she got cold. the slippers indoors was the daycare's idea and it worked out well since the floors were ice cold

@Mrs. Carrot: I would have no problem asking the teacher why they keep it so cold in there - if they say "its a rule" then talk to the director - 68 is cold!
My kids also keep sweaters in their cubbies in case they get cold

Yeah, I think I'd have to say something. 68 is cold. 68 blowing directly on sleeping kiddos is REALLY cold.

I think that sounds pretty cold and would say something or bring a sweater and tell them to put it on her if she seems cold. I hate extreme temps though!

@Mrs. Carrot: They keep the daycare rooms really cold, but it's more because they can't seem to get the a/c to regulate the temperature correctly. Anyway - I send my girls to class in a sweater and pants, but I have some shorts they can change into when they go outside. It's a hassle, but when it's 100+ degrees outside and then 68 degrees inside, it's too much of a fluctuation in temp for me to be comfortable wearing just pants or shorts.

Just chiming in that, as a teacher, I appreciate a colder temperature in a classroom. 68 sounds cold (my house is 67 in the mornings & I'm chilled in a tshirt and shorts), BUT when 14-20 little bodies are running around, playing, & whatnot it really warms a room up! In my preschool room I have a cardigan at drop-off time, but I'm sweating by the middle of work/playtime. Once they all lay down for rest it gets cool again, but they've got blankets for that

Aren't hospitals always cold because it keeps germs from thriving? I would just send in layers or a blanket for nap.
