Or where do you plan to? LO was born at Virginia Hospital Center, and it was awesome! I love my doctor there. The next LO will probably be born at Anne Arundel Medical Center because it's closer.

I'm interested in this...has anyone delivered at Southern Maryland? Assuming we ever get pregnant again, my insurance will cover me to deliver there or in Bethesda (Walter Reed). I can also switch to a different level of coverage and deliver at INOVA Alexandria.

@littlek: No, I started going to a practice at VHC when we lived on the Hill. Once we moved to MD I stayed there because it was still easy to go back and forth. We live just over the line, still close to the Hill. I loved my doctor, but now we have LO, and I know I would have to take her to appointments sometimes, and I think a closer hospital would just be better. AAMC is like 20 minutes from our house straight down 50, and there's rarely any traffic. VHC took 45+.

@rahlyrah: how did you like it there? I had heard mixed things so I went to St Joe's... Upper Chesapeake is closest to me but they don't have a NICU so I was nervous about going there. Franklin Square would have been the next closest.

@78h2o: I had an OK experience. I loved my L&D nurses so my delivery experience was wonderful. However, my LO caught a staph infection while we were there which was incredibly scary. I keep telling myself it was a freak occurrence that could've happened anywhere.
My OB is right next to Upper Chesapeake but they only deliver at Franklin Square for some reason.

Holy Cross in Silver Spring, for both my LOs. They deliver the most babies in MD!

@rahlyrah: OMG, that is awful about the staph infection. Totally scary.
A lot of Bel Air docs won't deliver at UC due to it not having a NICU. I go to a Bel Air practice that only delivers at St. Joe's.

@beaker: I was just talking to a friend that delivered at Holy Cross. She had a wonderful experience with both kids! I'm terrified that I would deliver on the beltway during rush hour if I went there

@Weagle: good point! Be sure not to go into labor on a weekday afternoon, haha

I looked up where my old obgyn delivers--if we'd stayed in DC I would be delivering at Sibley. That's actually where dh was born! I have no idea about what the hospital is actually like (we weren't thinking about ttc before we moved), but I really, really liked my doctor!

@nana87: Supposedly Sibley is really nice. I have friends that delivered there. None of them rave about it, but it definitely has a reputation.

@butterbean: me too!!! They have an amazing NICU. I think one of the best in the area. I'm a tad bit worried about not being close to Fairfax because they have the best NICU and high risk pregnancy ward (IMO). My friend spent a few months there on bedrest. I was supposed to be moved to high risk but B had plans of his own.... Oh well, he got excellent care in the NICU.

@littlek: that's comforting to know that they have a good NICU! i wish they had better food because i was starving after delivery

@ktdid23: I'm trying to find a practice affiliated with HCGH -- do you have any recommendations?

I delivered at Georgetown with their high risk group and was very happy. I considered doing the GW midwives, but they don't accept anyone with complications. I hear stories about Georgetown not being natural birth friendly but they were incredibly open to our doula, allowed me to labor in the tub as long as I wanted, and were just really supportive of me doing things the way I wanted. As a teaching hospital, there were med students around, but once labor got intense enough that it felt distracting I asked that they leave and they did so happily. We were very happy with the postpartum care as well.
ETA: I may not go back for the next one because the OBs there won't prescribe birth control (Catholic hospital). I respect their beliefs but it was very annoying needing to find a new doctor (and thus have additional postpartum visits) just for that purpose.

Update: LO2 was born at Anne Arundel Medical Center in September with the midwives from Bay Area Midwifery. We had a WONDERFUL experience, and I definitely encourage those on the Hill or in MD to check them out.

@nanilani: I used Signature ONGYN and loved the midwives! I ended up with an emergency C-Section and Dr. Sun did the surgery. I had a really great experience with the group. Here's the website: http://m.hopkinsmedicine.org/signature_obgyn/about_us/our_experts/certified_nurse_midwives.html

Sibley here as well (that's where my OB was practicing). If I had to do it over again, I wouldn't mind it, but I'd probably try to go with Virginia Hospital Center. Sibley was nice, no question, but it's a real hike from where we live (Falls Church). The staff was great, loved the private room, but after staying at VHC for surgery earlier this year, the VHC facilities seem to be just as nice, it's a lot closer to home and my friend who delivered there was allowed to stay for 2 weeks while her son was in the NICU, while I had to come back and forth to Sibley while my LO was in the NICU.

@hellobear: I loved Georgetown. They were fantastic for prenatal appointments. I never had a wait and the doctors were so fantastic. I had a completely unmedicated birth and no pressure for an epidural. It was a precipitous labor, so I had lots of medical attention (3 doctors, 2 nurses, 2 techs). That was far from ideal, but I did not have a normal birth. The residents and attending were great. I pushed in tons of positions and had tons of support. . They did put me on a clock to get the baby out before we had to do a forecept delivery, but all was good. I hemorrhaged after delivery and was repaired nicely. Immediate skin to skin until I went into shock. No bottles were given in the NICU, but they did give a pacifier.
Recovery was amazing. The NICU was great, the nurses really helped with breastfeeding, and they had private rooms. We will do Georgetown again.
@MrsBucky: Holy Cross. It's by far the best option. I'd drive there from Virginia except for that it's too close to my in-laws. My husband, 4 of his siblings, and 7 nieces and nephews have been born there, plus so many friends.

@Pollywog: it is super close to us but our experience in the ER this year didn't leave me with any desire to deliver there. Plus I was hoping to use a midwife again and I don't see any who have rights there? Anyway I'm glad to hear people have had good experiences there in case I end up there anyway!

@Pollywog: @Mrs. Carrot: oh great, thanks! gotta find an ob... im was initially leaning towards gu but sibley is a little closer.. hmmm..

@MrsBucky: I'm in Montgomery county, but as military, I delivered at Walter Reed both times. I know Holy Cross was my alternate if needed.
