Trim is definitely not a deal breaker for me. Honestly, I just don't care about the aestetics that much. Plus, it's always something that you can change if it really bugs you.

The bedroom thing would be more of a deal breaker than the cabinets and trim for me. Our house has wood cabinets and I wanted white so it was on my list to paint them but actually I like them now. They seem less trendy. As far as the trim, there are some older houses that have it stained and it looks gorgeous. It totally depends on the style and color. It is definitely more durable than white so that's a pro with young kids!
It might be nice when your kids are older to be on a different level. When we were looking, we figured we could put the kids together and have our room upstairs too until they were older. Would that be a possibility? It is a common layout and people seem to make it work with young kids but not my preference.
