Keep the diapers and call your pedi today. They will likely want to see your LO and test the stools for blood (even though it's obvious). This is what mine always did. Huggs!!

We suspect allergies with my son early on but no one listened until the bloody stools started. They were also at 8 weeks for him! He ha the green, stingy, mucous filled diapers since birth and would projectile vomit at each feed. He was colic like, very fussy and needed to be held vertical all the time (this was also when they finally started listen about reflux...he was a comfort nurser and gained weight well which made being listened to a battle).

I was breastfeeing so I was told to eliminate all forms, even trace amounts, of dairy, soy, egg, and peanuts from my diet. We started seeing pedi GI for the reflux a week later and since we were still getting bloody stools I was told to eliminate the rest of the top 8: wheat/gluten, tree nuts, fish and shellfish. It took 6 weeks for the diary proteins to clear our systems (these are the ones that usually take the longest ~2-4 weeks) an for us to stop seeing blood and things to improve. At 6 mo we gave him rice cereal and he projectile vomited and got bloody stools so he was diagnosed with FPIES (we started seeing a pedi allergist) and we ended up going on a TED (total elimination diet) to identify all his triggers. I was down to 3 foods and slowly added them back in one at a time.

Hopefully you wouldn't have to go to that extreme and only need to eliminate dairy/soy. Hsiang they tell you both since there is a 50/50 chance your LO will react to both. It seems difficult at first, but really the eliminations become second nature and you don't have to think about it as much. Just be sure to check your labels each time you go to the store since products change often and get a complete list of all the forms of the food you are eliminating to make identifying them easer. I would also start a food journal where you right down what you ate and how LO's diapers looked, temperament, whatever else you feel is different/off to see if you can find any corelations with certain foods.

Also don't feel pressured that you have to give up breastfeeding. Eliminating foods from your diet is certainly a viable option! Don't let anyone tell you it won't work...it certainly can! On the flip side don't feel pressured that you have to continue to breastfeed either. There are special formulas out there that may work for your LO. Urimetly you need to do what you feel is right for you and your LO...for us that was breastfeeing as long as possible on a TED and in our situation it was the best and only option. Good luck!!

@MrsRoo: That was exactly our mind set as well, but I didn't want to pressure you by saying it, so I'm glad you did! Not breastfeeding was NOT an option for us either, so I decided I would do whatever I could to make it work. It does get easier as time goes on

There are some other elimination diet mom's on here too so maybe they will come chime in their experiences for you. Again our experience is a little to the extreme side so hopefully you won't need to take it that far....definitely a labor of love, but anything for our LO's!!

We actually took matters into our own hands and made the appointment with the pedi GI ourselves. It was a LONG wait, but we got in on a cancellation right away, which happened to be a week after the regular pedi diagnosed him with GERD and at the time MSPI. It was the pedi GI they would have referred us to anyway (he is really the only and best one in our area)...The way we found him was my mom was seeing the regular GI's in their practice and the nurse commented about how big DS was at her appointment and then pulled the pedi GI's nurse aside to look at him. We have recently switched pedi GI's to one at a Children's Hospital. If you are close to one of them or don't mind traveling, they usually have excellent care.

M was always very fussy when I was bf. It wasn't until we switched to formula (which has way more cows milk proteins than she was getting from breast milk) at 3 months that she had visible blood in her stool. They diagnosed MPI, we switched to nutramigen and she was much happier and no more blood when they test her stool at the dr's. Hope you get some answers soon!

Good luck. My son was MSPI and I did TED for a month and then no dairy or soy for 17 months. Then no soy for 6 months which got us to 2 years breastfeeding. I did it so I could control his diet. We ended up not getting his gut clean until I went away for a week and we did a neocate formula trial. He ate it up and (9 months old) went back to breast and we kept going.
