Ok, I would paint the light pressed-board bookshelf, but nothing else (read up on painting pressed-board before you do it, you need a good primer). To add a pop of color I would use throw pillows instead. The dark furniture is nice and neutral and looks like it's stained(?) I think you may end up disappointed with painted furniture that shows scratches easily (ahem, kiddos).

What's your favorite color? I would do a bold pillow color in 3 different prints and paint the bookshelf to match.

If this were my space and I really wanted to change the look of the room, then I'd lighten up the walls a little and go with a more light gray to complement the browns of the couches and stone wall, but tone down the overall orangy-brownish-taupe you've got going on with the current wall color and all the leather. And then, if you're up for it, you could take your fireplace cover outside, tape it off and spray the brass areas with a matte stainless/nickle color spray paint to blend with the new walls and to let the stone wall be more of a focal point. Whew, that was a total tangent!

I agree with the others - leave the dark furniture alone, paint the light shelf a fun color, add colorful pillows.
