Hookworms in a puppy hopefully a vet/vet tech will chime in but I know from working with/in dog rescue that hookworms often kill puppies; so yes, you may have to address that with your Lo (sorry). They are not like other "generic worms" a dog might need treatment for. What they do to dogs, especially puppies, is truly horrific.

Also - hookworms will be passed in the puppies poop and can live for months in soil so you really, really have to pick up his poop in a plastic trash bag and not leave it in your yard (or anywhere else on the ground). Other dogs in the future visiting your home months from now could get infected that way.

I'm sorry to hear this, hookworms are one of the more miserable beasts out there.

For hookworms or really any intestinal parasite infestation, always use good hygiene. Pick up stool immediately after your pup goes potty and I'd even goes as far as to wipe his tush with a baby wipe after he goes to prevent reinfestation. Also the initial dewormer kills the adult worms however with the parasites life cycle he'll need the additional dewormer at least to kill off any remaining worms in his GI tract, followed by a recheck of his stool sample a few weeks after that.

With hookworms I can't stress enough how important it is to keep your pups environment clean and pick up the stool immediately as the parasite can live in the soil for many months and can be picked up by you walking through your yard barefoot.

As far as the lack of appetite, that should improve in the next day or so, if not call your vet and your pup may need a recheck. Try offering a more palatable food to get his appetite going (boiled chicken or rice).

@Mrs. Sunshine: yikes, blood in stool especially in puppies isn't good especially if it's not resolving with treatment. I would call the vet in the morning, they may want to run more tests and at least send home more oral meds to help firm up his stool. Is he up to date on his puppy vaccines?
