Our families have been very supportive of breastfeeding but I know no one went beyond a year so they're all wondering when she'll be weaned. There's been a few comments but nothing major. But I have started to feel more and more self conscious when people ask if I'm still nursing. LO is 15 months and eats plenty of food so I don't usually nurse while we're out and about though a couple times while we were traveling I did when she got fussy. I feel a lot more self conscious about it now that LO is older even though I'm very comfortable with the decision to keep nursing for a bit. It's just I know other people think it's weird and I let it get to me , anyone else deal with this mental block with nursing a 1 year old.

LO is only 6 months but I'm already worried about this. I plan to nurse as long as I can but my IL's have already make comments about extended nursing and that it is weird. I'm not sure how I'm going to handle it

Hmm. My LO is 3 months (almost 4!) and the size of a 6+ month old and I wonder but I don't care. I don't know what I will do later on with regards to stares/comments....

My mom nursed me till I was 18 months. As long as your lo is healthy, that's all that matters. Doesn't matter what others think!

DS is 6 months and for his sake I want to make it to 24 months (we'll see if that happens!!) and I worry about this too!! When I was pregnant I was hanging out with a group of friends who were all talking about how gross it is to see toddlers "asking" for milk. "If they're old enough to ask, they're too old!" I thought that was the lamest argument ever.
I kept my mouth shut because I was still pg and didn't (and don't) even know if I'd make it that far, but thought it was so ignorant and rude. Especially because it has NOTHING to do with what others think - it's about the child's health- physical and emotional I believe.
Anyway - sorry, I've seen so much negativity it bothers me.

@Coco Bee: that is exactly what my MIL said... and I'm thinking "aaaawwwkward......" especially since we're doing baby sign and she will likely be asking for it some time in her life.
What kills me is that my 2.5year old niece still takes bottles of milk at night, and that's totally normal, but me nursing my daughter at the same age is strange.

I think the comments are what bother me most, more than actually nursing in front of others. That said, at around one year I tried to limit nursing to when we were at home just for my own convenience.

@prettylizy: I'm teaching DS the sign too (right now he just laughs whenever I do it! haha!), and I HOPE he learns to ask for it before a year old.
Yeah I think you have to develop a thick skin when you choose to do extended breastfeeding. Eventually you have to do what's right for YOU and your LO, and consciously make the effort to not care what others say.
I think that if anyone says anything, I will say that he's my son and it's my decision and I feel that at this time it's the best one for us. And leave it at that. If people try to push it further, I would leave the conversation.

@Coco Bee: yeah, she doesn't get the sign yet, but as soon as my boob comes out her eyes get REALLY wide and she smiles!! It cracks me right up!
I think you're right, thick skin is the way to go.
LO is MSPI, so I know for sure my milk is going to be the safest for her for a long time......

I'm worried about this, too. I plan on allowing LO to decide when to stop nursing, but I know there's gonna be a few people, including some family members, who aren't gonna understand. I can have a pretty thick skin when it comes to most stuff, but I have a tough time if my family criticizes me, so hopefully they'll keep their comments and opinions to themselves.
