Did you eat the placenta?

My doula encouraged it and I went into labor with an open mind about it. After seeing my meconium slathered placenta I knew I couldn't eat it in any form. Maybe next time.

Yes. Had it encapsulated by my doula. It gave me the opposite effect. Increased PPD/PPAnxiety! The day I stopped taking them I felt like my old self again!

No, it's definitely not for me

Didn't with my first two births, but after huge milk supply issues both times and crazy PPD after my last birth, I'm definitely doing it this time. At one time I would have said, "HAAAAAYYYYLLL NO, I will never be that crunchy!" but now I'm at the point where I could probably do a raw smoothie if I had to. But planning to have it encapsulated anyways- I'll be taking a million and one other capsules to help with my supply issues, I probably won't notice a few more with dried organ in it, lol.
I would like to point out that even animals with no predators eat their afterbirths.

I looked into getting it encapsulated, but decided against it because it was expensive. If I had a hard time emotionally after pregnancy, I would do it with subsequent pregnancies. So far I have felt great though.

I have a couple of friends who made smoothies with theirs. That grosses me out so much...

No way. The thought absolutely nauseates me. I don't even want to see it after.

Ladies who are disgusted by the placenta encapsulation: How do you feel about breastfeeding/breastmilk? Would you try your own?

I know it's not the same thing, honestly just curious!

I see it as a product my body is creating for a healthy pregnancy, and if it can help during the PP period, then I'll try it. I do think it's a little gross, and I have a hard time swallowing pills anyway, but again, if it helps, I can't think of a reason not to take them.

@JessKas: You can process yourself, even do encapsulation at home, if you are really interested and cost is a factor. We wanted to save money and also the only person near us who did encapsulation had moved out of state before Lowly was born. We did not encapsulate, but did the processing ourselves.

I did. DH and I encapsulated it ourselves. I could feel a real marked difference in my mood on the days I took it. My milk supply was fantastic. Also, I never had any postpartum hair loss!

I'll do it again next time.

@Vegmama: I've tried a few drops of my milk. I'm not disgusted by placenta consumption...it just isn't for me.

@autumnlove: and I'm the opposite I guess. I'll eat my placenta but everything about breast milk makes me queasy

Placenta eating is definitely not for me.

And I have been BFing almost 9 months and I have never tried my own milk. I just couldn't, lol

@Vegmama: I exclusively breastfed (+ solids) for 13 months and never once tried a drop of it. I view eating a placenta differently though. Breast milk is well known to be specifically designed for infants with everything they need. I haven't yet been sold on the idea that placentas are on the same level.

@Ree723: Agreed ... I wish there were more studies either way, ya know?

I'm not sure I'd try my breastmilk, but I don't drink milk in general. Seems like all milk is for babies, but I have to admit, I am curious! My husband says he won't, but I keep teasing him with the, "You'll drink cows milk, but not breast milk?", and he just rolls his eyes.
