We would sometimes go out in the back yard and catch a bunch and put them in a jar. Then the whole jar would light up with the collective light of dozens of lightning bugs! It was truly an amazing thing to behold.
Ah, childhood. I wonder if kids do things like this any more...

Yes, but I rarely see them around here anymore. I loved catching them, and my sister loved smushing them on her clothes. She was a bit morbid. 
We went to see the synchronized lighting bugs 2 summers ago, and it was one of the most amazing things I've ever seen. Even my husband, who griped the whole 11 hour drive about how stupid a trip this was thought it was pretty damn neat and would even go again.

Yes! Loved it! My brother used to tie strings to their legs and fly them around.

Yep! It was definitely a big part of my southern summers. I don't think I've ever seen a firefly here though.

Whenever we visited my dad's side of the family in Missouri, we would always catch them at night. There are so many out there in the "country"!

Odd one out here. We didn't have them where I grew up, and didn't see a real, legit one until I was 26!! A little too old to be running around and putting them in jars, heh.

Yeah, I grew up in the country surrounded by fields. There were tons during the summer. I don't remember putting them in jars, but they were so ubiquitous that we eventually stopped noticing them at all. Which is a little sad to me now. I'm not sure how many I'll see in the suburbs!
@MediaNaranja: That reminds me of my friend who grew up in a city. He had never seen a lightning bug and asked "do they bite?" !!!

We don't have them in the Bay Area, so I had never seen them until I was in college and went out East. I think they're amazing! I hope our LO gets to experience them before he gets too old.
