This has got to be one of the signature sound of the 1990s: the screeching sound of a modem as it did a handshake with the AOL network.
Did you ever dial into AOL using a phone modem?

Oh, to be 13 again. We had a dedicated phone line for the internet because my mom had an ebay businesa. I also remember there were like a few different numbers you could call in each area. Man, AOL was so incredible back then. I take tge internet for granted now (as I am typing this from my phone). I wonder if you can still see AOL profiles anywhere?

Oh yes!!! And sadly I still hear it when I go home bc my parents house is in the boonies and they can only get dial up! And my mom still uses aol... So so sad!

Well, not AOL since I'm in Canada, but I've sat through that noise many a time in my youth! I also remember when logging minutes was a big deal, and you only had so many minutes of internet time per month.

Haha, yes! I was actually going on to AOL when my dad had his first heart attack. He normally took a certain amount of time changing out the laundry, and didn't walk back past, and I noticed, turned around, and saw what was happening. Funny what connections our brains make.

I totally remember this from elementary school and middle school years.

@mrbee: No, I totally remember having an AOL account...Wait, are you teasing me?

Yes! I racked up some MAJOR phone bills when we first got it! The free cd said something like "50 free hours!" But I didn't realize the phone bill would be affected. I think at least 2 of the bills were like almost a thousand.
I would also wake up in the middle of the night to use AOL at 2am, after my parents went to bed... they limited my time in the computer.

Yes! I hated having to wait to use the Internet until my mom was off of the phone.

Yes I remember it! How much we hated that sound and how long and drawn out it was. It's funny...the other day, my 12 yr old niece was watching some youtube video and it had that signature sound in it. I realized she had never heard it in real life. It was so crazy to think that!

I remember going to a friend's house and using the Internet for the first time. I was super impressed. My first website? Disney.com (: haha, I feel old /:
