They would have it at the city park and me and my little sister would sometimes walk there and go eat. But it was a rare occurance. Maybe 5-7 times the whole time growing up?

I don't think my school district had this. If they did, I didn't go!

does this mean if you qualified for free lunch during the school year, they would also serve you free lunch during the summer?
I have never heard of it. Maybe my district didn't offer it. Also, I was homeschooled until high school. I didn't qualify for school lunch, and I drove off-campus to eat McDonalds or Burger King every FRICKING DAY. I have no idea how I wasn't obese. I ate fast food 7 days a week.

I'm not sure. My grandparents lived in a low income area and free lunches were passed out on her block over the summer. When I visited her over the summer I would sometimes eat the free lunch. I don't know if everyone had to sign up or who really sponsored the lunches or how they knew how many lunches to provide.

I think you had to be from a low-income family to qualify for free school lunch. But I remember our babysitter just taking a whole gang of us kids and some of those kids did not attend my school, so I don't know how they checked?

nope. i went to private school and we didn't even have a caf where you could buy lunch. once i was in public school when i was older, i worked during the summers. i've seen them handing out bagged lunches at the park near me though, i think it's great because there are so many children that go hungry when school isn't in session.

the park across the street from our house used to have free lunches in the summer and we'd go to them.

They have it in the city parks here, so my girls took advantage this summer.

It never occurred to me this wasn't nationwide or in all districts!

I have never heard of this at all.
Also, do all schools in the US have lunches there? Or is it only at big schools?
I am not familiar with lunches being provided at any elementary schools here, though I am sure there are probably some...

@locavore_mama: It seems to be nationwide from the link I posted earlier but I guess not all districts do it.
