We got a new washer and dryer set for $800 off. We also got a new tv; not sure of the savings on that one.

I'm using the deal at Paper Coterie to make calendars for my parents and inlaws. And I sent DH some links for stuff for me.

@shopaholic: We don't have a huge budget for a camera so the two we purchased were on the lower end of the price scale.

The first: Canon Vixia HF R300

So far in testing, video quality is great, and camera seems to be well constructed. No noise when zooming or pressing buttons. Has horrible battery life reviews, but the package we bought from Costco ($249) came with an extra extended life battery.
The extended battery took about 3 hours to charge, but was still running after an hour and a half (when my memory card died) It had 1 bar left.

The second: Sony HDR-CX190

Video quality was about the same as the canon, but anytime I used the zoom, you could hear the zoom noise recorded onto the video. I didn't like that. It also didn't have a touch screen and seemed more cheaply constructed.
The battery only took an hour to charge and still had 3 bars left when my memory card died at 1.5 hours.

My guess is there's probably a few better options out there if you're willing to spend closer to $400, but we had a max of $250 to spend. I think we're going to return the Sony and keep the Canon. I don't like the fact that we may not get a lot of battery life out of it, but at this point in time we're going to be using it for short family videos. When it comes time for recitals/soccer games/etc we'll upgrade to something better.

If you have a bigger budget than us, I'd suggest to look around a little more, but if your budget is less than $250 or you're ok with only an hour to an hour and a half of recording at a time then the canon is a decent choice.

@travelingbrit: Thanks for the links and reviews! Will email them to DH since it's what he's been wanting since we found our we're pregnant! But the zoom noise thing would drive me bonkers probably, but it's up to him. And no, I wasn't thinking $400 range, so probably a $200-ish one would be good. Thanks!
