My experience was pretty different from yours so far. I had very high, doubling betas...no spotting, no pain...and just saw the empty sac on routine ultrasound at 6.5 weeks. I had a D+C a few weeks later (around 9 weeks) because it wasn't going anywhere fast.

@travellingbee: I had slow rising Hcg.. 112, 300 , 1200 when I started spotting and when I went back the next day (maybe 2 days later) it was down to 700. They only saw an empty sac on the ultrasound. The miscarriage happened around 6.5 weeks.

I had two of them. First around 6-7 weeks and second around 8-10 weeks. I don't remember what my levels were but basically the ultrasounds showed just an empty sac both times. Both times they gave me pills to insert to start labor to naturally miscarry. It just felt like really heavy cramping so I had to take 3 Advils to help make me more comfortable. My first one took too long so I ended up with a D&C. The second time it worked and I just had really heavy bleeding and a few big clots and that was it. The recovery for D&C wasn't too bad. I didn't bleed for too many days afterwards. With the second I bled longer but I don't remember it being too bad either. I'd say by the second week I was back to myself but still had to take it easy since it's like "giving birth" as one of the nurses told me when I went in for a D&C. The only thing after my first miscarriage was that my periods became really heavy, like soaking through maxi pads for a couple of cycles. I'm sorry you have to go through this. *Hugs*

@travellingbee: My experience was really different as I never had betas drawn. I went to nearly 11 weeks (pretty symptom-less) before I started spotting. The ultrasound revealed an irregularly shaped gestational sac. I had a D&C a couple days later. Here's a post I made about D&Cs.

I had a blighted ovum in Oct/Nov. I had no idea anything was wrong until I went in for my first ultrasound at 9.5 weeks and saw just a gestational sac. My symptoms had subsided a bit, but it didn't really make me think anything was wrong as I didn't really have morning sickness with my son. They told me I could wait it out but after 2 weeks of just spotting (which didn't start until 3 days after my ultrasound) I asked for Misoprostol. The medication worked for me, with no real problems. The only thing that bothered me (other than the fact that I was losing a baby of course) was that I thought I passed everything but two days later I woke up in the middle of the night to what I can only describe as contractions, where I passed more tissue. After that it was just like a really long period, and my normal period returned 40 days later. I hope that you are not having a miscarriage of any kind, but if you are my thoughts are with you as you go through this difficult time.

I know we've talked a bit on the other board posts but it's been a bit disjointed so here's my summary, start to finish.

Light HPTs at 12 DPO, HPTS continued getting darker. Clearblue digital said 1-2 weeks and then 2-3 weeks at the appropriate times, but then stayed stuck there .... never saw a 3+, even at 6 weeks. Very mild pregnancy symptoms. So I was a bit nervous going into my first appointment.

At the 6w3d ultrasound, the gestational sac measured 5w0d, no yolk sac, no fetal pole, nothing. Betas that day were 3000ish, two days later it was 4000ish. It was on the low side and slow-rising. Two days after the ultrasound (the day of the 2nd betas), I started miscarrying, basically like a period for me. However, I passed a quarter-sized clump of tissue, which I was NOT emotionally prepared for (due to the "empty" looking ultrasound).

The next week, my betas dropped to 1700, but then rose again to 2000, then 1800, then 1900. My ultrasound still revealed a smaller, more-irregularly shaped sac or clot. My doctor was afraid it could be a pseudo-sac, which happens in 10-20% of ectopic pregnancies, and fluctuating HCG levels (up, down, etc) is also an ectopic indicator, which I'm sure you've read. So she told me to go to the hospital, basically for a second opinion / possible ectopic treatment.

It turned out to not be ectopic, but an incomplete miscarriage of a blighted ovum. I read multiple times that BO's only have like a 60% chance of a complete, natural miscarriage. Since I had been bleeding for two weeks with no resolution, my doctor prescribed misoprotol, which I took over a 3 day weekend. It wasn't horrible (basically a very uncomfy period) but it obviously was very sad. She prescribed Percocet so that helped me relax and sleep. I had positive HPTs for about a week or two after that, and it took 46 days for AF to come back.

In retrospect, I kind of wish I had had the D & C, so it would've been over faster; but I couldn't have known that in retrospect.

I've attached a picture of my progressing HPTs. I hope it's not a trigger for anyone, it just might be helpful / instructive for future readers of this post. I thought the darkening HPTs were a good sign, but obviously not good enough.

My hcg was rising normally, but the b.o. was detected by ultrasound. Hcg got up to 50k before I had the d&e around 8.5w. My procedure did not go well, I ended up taking two rounds of misoprostol after the d&e because of prolonged bleeding. The meds failed and I continued to bleed. They monitored my hcg, which slooooowly dropped for almost 8 weeks, when I finally passed retained tissue that they never found on u/s. The waiting was the worst part. I'm so sorry you're going through this. Hugs.
