No. My mom was a believer that you helped around the house because you're a part of the family, not because you're being paid to do so. But they bought me whatever I wanted, within reason, and I usually had birthday money or whatever when I was little. Also when I was around 10 I started cleaning my grandma's house for money.

No. I had plenty of chores but no allowance.

Nope, but once we were in junior high, we got report card money based on our grades.

We (my brothers and I) got half our age a week, but then anything we wanted (outside if food, stuff for school, birthdays and Christmas) we got ourselves. DH didn't get one but his parents would get him random stuff all the time. We haven't decided what we'll do yet.

Yes but not in cash. We had a running tab on the fridge and it was up to us to update it weekly and write the date. Once they bought us something they subtracted it from the tab.

@beaker: half your age seems like a good plan.

I think they tried it a few times but it never really stuck. Eventually the deal became you do chores because you're party of a family but if you wanted to earn extra money you could ask for odd jobs to do and get paid for doing extra.

No allowance here! My parents did not want to encourage the idea of helping out because we wanted to get paid; they taught us that taking care of our home and our things was a responsibility that we all shared equally, out of respect. They bought us things that we needed and wanted, within reason. I also started babysitting fairly young, and had a part-time job at age 16, so I usually had money of my own anyway.

No allowance but I would bring my lunch to save my lunch money if I really wanted to get something that week. I started working at 16 so bought my first car by the end of summer. That was such a good feeling!
