Yes it was after I was already laboring. We were making no progress and my Ob asked to use a vacuum assist. But she also had to cut because LO 's head was too big.
It was no big deal and recovery wasn't that bad for me. 2-3 stitches.

No I didn't, and I only had 1st degree tearing. Lo was small and born en caul which I think helped lube things up! I had asked my dr before about them and she said shed only done 4 in 10. Years!

@Mrs. Champagne: in a perfect world, I would not have wanted a vacuum, but in the moment, when they offered, I jumped all over that jazz. It was more for me than baby, but it was the right choice regardless.
I'm so glad that you are feeling better! I still can't squat without pain, and the incision is tender, but healing. Day by day we are getting there!

No, I talked to my doctor about not doing one (she said they rarely do) and I barely tore anyway (I think DH said I had MAYBE 6 small stitches). LO had a 97th percentile head so I always say the doctor did an amazing job guiding her out.

Nope. My dr is super against them. My DD was very stuck but we never discussed episiotomy in the moment. It just wasn't an option. She was born by vaccuum assist though. I didn't end up tearing at all and my healing has been a piece of cake.

I had one. I was peeved that nobody consulted me first, but in retrospect it was no big deal. DH was aware of it, and thought it was the right call. I had an epidural, so I did not feel it. My recovery was extremely easy. I was walking laps around the hospital the next day, going on long walks within a week, and was in no pain within two weeks. I am as good as new now.

Nope, but I did have a 2nd degree year that is still fixing me issues (granular tissue the doc is taking care of at the repair site) 10 weeks later.

My OB wanted to give me one but I refused (several times). R was sunny side up so I pushed for over a total of 3 hours. She finally told me that if I didn't have the baby out soon I was getting one. I got that kid out. I tore naturally (2nd "and a half" degree tear).

Yes. That's all I have to say about that!! Except.... I healed fine and its all good. Id have one again if needs be.

Yes, because I needed a forceps assist. It really wasn't that bad. The first couple days were the worst.

You all are scaring me! My c-section sounds pretty lovely right now!!
nectarine / 2994 posts
Nope, and didn't tear thankfully. I had a labial graze though which they usually don't worry about stitches for but because I was a high risk of bleeding they put 2 stitches there for "just in case"

I had one as LO was a ventouse (vacuum) delivery and in my midwife's words - "I didn't want you to wreck your pelvic floor!!"
Recovery was excellent and I had several people tell me how neat the stitching was

I did not have one, but I did have a small 1st degree tear. My birth plan stated that I would prefer to tear naturally. They did a lot of perineal massage to help me out.

I didn't have one, I did tear, though.
eta: the recovery was easy, not at all what I had expected.
cantaloupe / 6059 posts
No, I did not. I only had a 2nd degree tear despite having a big baby with a big head and recovery was a breeze which I was SO thankful for!

No, and I didn't tear either. My midwife used lots of oil and massage to stretch me out as I pushed.

@LAZB: My LO had a really pointy head too - my husband was asking the nurses if he needed a helmet on Day 2, the poor thing's head was so misshapen.
pomelo / 5326 posts
No I didn't have one but had a 2nd degree tear. My recovery was fine, I didn't really notice the tear.

I didn't get one and I ended up with a second degree tear. Everything healed up back to normal tho!
@nana87: your baby was born en caul ! That's neat!
grapefruit / 4582 posts
No and I didn't tear either.
Eta: I remember my doctor saying "these scissors aren't for you!" And I had no idea she even had scissors but it was to cut something for my catheter.
pineapple / 12053 posts
Nope. I pushed for 45 minutes and in my doula's notes, she made a comment about the OB supporting my perineum to help. I had a small peri urethral tear.

I can't decide if the feedback has made me feel better or worse about idea, but I appreciate hearing everyone's experiences either way!

@LovelyPlum: @mrschampagne: I did not realize they "came with the territory" of a vacuum assist? I had a vacuum but no episiotomy- but because I was so freaked out about them I think I mentioned it a bunch of times.
@arden: I had a really wonderful birth experience overall but the one and only thing that bothers me is the ob (came in at the end of a midwife delivery bc of heart rate issues) was about to cut me when I managed to push her out. She didn't, so it doesn't mater, but it bugs me a little that she didn't say anything. And that was in a really pro natural birth hospital with midwives and everything. So I agree with your point.
persimmon / 1304 posts
Nope. My doc told me she very rarely does episiotomies...flash forward to labor and the doc who happened to be in call was begging to give me one. Ugh. I declined and tore naturally. 2nd degree external that was a little painful but ultimately healed up just fine.
honeydew / 7589 posts
@Foodnerd81: Yep. I'm not pro or anti episiotomy (I know they are occasionally necessary), but I am extremely pro informed consent. It really bothers me when it happens without permission from the mama, especially in a non-emergent situation.

I had one, and a forceps delivery, and my recovery was a piece of cake. I think because I had an obstetrics surgeon doing my forceps delivery and stitch up, it was very well done. My midwives always seemed very impressed when they checked me down below! I never felt much pain and never had issues sitting for long periods, or any down there stuff.
TMI alert - sex is definitely different since the baby. Feels like the first time!!
pomelo / 5820 posts
Nope. The OB did a perineal massage in between pushes. I had a between a 1st and 2nd degree tear, though. Nothing awful, though it was the most painful part about recovery.
pomegranate / 3231 posts
Nope and I barely tore. My OB wanted to give me one stitch and I freaked out (because even after delivering a baby I am still a baby about medical stuff) and so she left me alone. She massaged me with olive oil while I was pushing and so I think that may have helped me avoid tearing. My OB is my new hero. She was amazing!
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
No, my OB said it's only something she does when it is absolutely necessary and rarely performs them. She was VERY good about having me labor down, using hot water and other stuff, and slowly pulling E out little by little so that I would minimally tear (i only tore b/c of her nose, dammit!). Only two stitches for me.
clementine / 948 posts
I don't believe I had one but I had bad tearing (extensive 2nd degree and now have perineal scar tissue that makes sex painful. Blah). I hope this doesn't scare you. I am the only lucky one of my friends with this problem
apricot / 491 posts
No, I tore though. Like pretty bad. DS just slipped right out after his head came. They couldn't have me pause to get him situated! I guess they give episiotomies less often because the body heals better to natural tears.
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22646 posts
Yep, I had one. My OB typically doesn't but after pushing for two hours, I was telling them to cut me open! (I meant my belly, but yano, whatever works! :P)... DS was born with 14 inch head. I have no regrets. And healed normally with no issues.
honeydew / 7917 posts
No episiotomy, and I had a small tear that didn't require any stitches. I didn't tear with my second either, and he came a lot faster than my first.
