@T-Mom; I know many people do. The fact that it is a cultural tradition was what saved us. That was the only way they would let us take it. I think it's an awesome tradition-- the idea of something growing right along with baby and nourished by the same source... so fitting. I would have done that had I not thought that dehydrating it/eating it would be a good idea.

No, I think what I went through was fairly normal for being a new mom. I had my ups and downs (early days in the NICU and breastfeeding mainly) and was very stressed and overwhelmed at times, but nothing a little time and support couldn't take care of. I was definitely concerned about the possibility of it happening, and feel very blessed that it went as well as it could have.
ETA- we said no to most visitors except for our parents and siblings for the first 3 weeks. That would have stressed me out too much

@highwire: I’m pretty much exactly the same situation as you. I saw my OB soon after LO was born and was put on Zoloft for PPD and also saw a therapist. I still take Zoloft and I feel like I could definitely get off of it now (and could have gotten off of it a few months ago), but my OB advised the PPD can strike within the first year so I’ll take it until LO is over a year old just to be on the safe side.
I've had depression in the past, and there was absolutely no way I was going down that road again so I was extremely proactive about talking to my doctor about what were “baby blues” and what was PPD.
