I never helped my parents cook! They tried to teach me but I wasn't interested!

Nope! And since I had three older sisters, I hardly ever cooked until I moved away to college. I had a steep learning curve!

I did! I actually started cooking dinner for my family when I was in 4th grade. My sisters were never interested in cooking and my parents came home at 6:30-7pm so they didn't have time to cook.

Yep, and by high school I did two dinners a week and most of the bread.

Not on a daily basis. I would help for special occasions and holidays, and I would help bake.

Never!! And I really regret it now because my mom is an excellent cook and I don't know how to make Korean food at all now.

No, and my mom regrets it to this day. SHe used to come home and just make the meal so it was on the table, but she wishes she would have taught us the basics after we would call her from college asking about the easiest things (I remember calling to ask how to boil eggs.) I plan on cooking/baking with my daughter so she has a good grasp around the kitchen!

Every now and then...my parents didn't trust me too much in the kitchen, and I wasn't that interested. They made sure I could follow directions on a box, and brown hamburger meat. Now I can cook a lot, but its all mostly self taught and all from recipes with good directions. I can't just throw a meal together based on whats in the pantry.
I should add that I was super busy in high school with activites/work almost every night so I didn't have many chances to actually cook. As much as I don't want my children to not be able to cook...I think in HS their activites that they enjoy come first, so if they are really busy it wont bother me as long as they can follow directions and brown hamburger meat, they can feed themselves and learn the rest a little later when they NEED to.

Yep!
They were smallbusiness owners so that was part of the deal when I got a car .... I wasn't allowed to go out until I had dinner ready! They didn't really mandate it, but I enjoyed learning and am so grateful now for being able to cook so many diff dishes now

HA--yeah right. We didn't do anything useful. Mom and dad were way too easy on us!

I always begged to help! I usually only got to peel the garlic or something silly like that.
I rarely cooked dinner alone though (well, not until high school).

Yup! I always wanted to help in the kitchen so my mom started out by giving me small tasks to do and then eventually I was able to make dinner on my own. Sometime in elementary school I decided I was going to make breakfast on the weekends. My mom didn't help at all, just supervised so I wouldn't burn myself.

I was such a picky eater growing up that I started to make dinner for the family just so that I would know that I would like it. Now I LOVE to cook.

I helped with baking and special things that I was interested when I was little. As I got older my mom would call me into the kitchen when she was making one of my favorite meals so I'd know how to do it. Once I was competent I got the famous pasta sauce recipe! Even when she wasn't going over a recipe she'd give me little tips when she was cooking. I think her little lessons really helped me feel confident in the kitchen. I love cooking and I think I'm pretty good at it!
