D and I are on a family share plan with my ILs. They use more of the minutes, D and I would use more of the data but we're often on our WiFi, so it doesn't count against it. It works out well.

We are with Verizon and currently pay $240 for 4 people w/ 2GB data & unlimited texts. I don't care about minutes since nobody talks on the phone much.

I really want to make the switch to something like StraightTalk or MetroPCS where it's only around $40-$45 per person for unlimited everything!

We are with Verizon - 4 people, 1400 mins and 2GB data and we never go over. We use Wi-Fi as much as we can to keep the data low and other Verizon users don't count against your minutes

we do a share plan with 5 of us on verizon. much cheaper!

We are in process of switching, but there is so much to sort out - it's more complicated than it needs to be.

It's my understanding that the cost of the actual cell phone is now handled differently, so instead of owning your phone, you "lease" it by paying a certain amount. (The smart phones I looked at were around $25/month). So if you drop it and the screen cracks, you owe the cost of the phone if you don't have insurance. If you do have insurance (that's also a monthly fee) it's a $200 deductible. And you never own the phone, you just trade it in at the end of 18 or 24 months.

@bluestriped bee: The other option (which I think we are going to do) is to pay for the phone outright at retail price so you do own it. The only downside is the high initial cost.

I LOVE my phone now even though it is almost a year old. I feel like I could have used it for a much longer, but DH dropped it and the screen shattered. I'm not one of those people that need the latest gadget anyway.
