I'm a HUGE reader. My husband is not. I would like to register for kids books. I think it's important for kids to have lots of choices of books to read so they don't want to gravitate towards electronics. I know infants don't read and you really don't read to them but why not register for books? We're discussing this and I wanted to get your opinions.

We registered for like 2-3. I know one we registered for was the board book GoodNight Moon.

I don't think we're going to register for them, but instead of doing a diaper raffle at your baby shower, how about doing a book raffle instead? I think we might do that because we're planning on cloth diapering.

We didn't register for books but the baby shower that was thrown for me (and one that I threw for a friend as well) was themed "baby's first library" and each guest was asked to buy/bring/give/donate their favourite children's book as a gift (if they wished to do so). I ended up with a bookcase filled with books! It's beautiful to have all of these colourful books in her room! I would DEFINITELY register for books!

I didn't register for books, but I have a bunch of books on LO's wishlist for her 1st birthday.
We did get some books from friends and family members though.

I love to give and receive books, I got a ton for my son's first birthday. If I had a normal registry/shower, I would have registered for books as well as some toys and entertainment items. Don't forget though, that you don't just read in books, there are flashcards, letter links, electronic musical books, first learning computers as well. DS has the Vtech Touch and Teach Turtle (not sure if that's the right name) and he's been pushing the buttons and turning the pages since he was 6 months.

I didn't because I wanted to focus on things we needed so I wouldn't end up shelling out a bunch of cash for necessities because people bought clothes and toys instead. Plus, people tend to buy books anyway, I still got a ton.
I've also been to a shower where we were asked to bring our favorite book instead of a card and write a message in the book.

@Rubies: what a GREAT idea!! If my Mom throws my shower, I'm totally asking her to do that. I know she has a ton of friends in her area who are grandparents who would love to "donate" books to a good cause, too. 
@artbee: That's my husband's reasoning. We need certain things. We don't need books. Good to know people give them to you anyways. I like the idea of the message in the book...

@mediagirl: if you don't register for them you can always use word of mouth. People were always asking me what I really wanted. You can tell those people you want books.

We registered for books and our guests LOVED buying us books over our other registry items (we registered on Amazon).

Wish I had- this is what we got lots of duplicates of and had to return more than clothes or other items.

We didn't initially register for books, but we did end up adding them to our registry. We're pretty minimalist when it comes to baby gear, and we borrowed a lot of stuff from siblings and friends, so our registry was pretty much completed after my shower. We added books to our Amazon registry so that there were still items on the registry for out of town friends and family. We now have a nice little library.

For a friend's baby shower, everyone was told to bring their favorite childhood book (in lieu of a greeting card) and inscribe a message on the inside cover for the baby. I thought it was a great idea!

I don't plan of registering for books, but my Mom is a huge book buyer, so I think she will be throwing a lot of kids books our way.

I already told my mom my plan because she'll likely plan any shower -
in lieu of cards, I want a book with a message written to the baby!
we have a TON of books that my mom saved from our childhood days (a bookcase full) but I love the idea of the note. I cherish the books I received as a child with a handwritten note.

Just a couple. A lot of people got us books as gifts, and then our coworkers threw us an unexpected book/ornament shower. So we've got a ton of them for all reading levels now. It's great.
