Getting over a case of mastitis that I'm still taking antibiotics for, and wondering what I should do with my pumped milk.
Do I dump it? Will feeding it to LO later increase her risk of thrush?

interesting
I'm on antibiotics for a kidney infection. I'm not storing any more than one or two bottles just because that's what I always do, but I am interested to hear responses. Why would the chances of thrush increase? Are we more at risk for thrush now because I'm on antibiotics? I was thinking the opposite would be true.

@cvbee: From what I've read, taking antibiotics make you more susceptible to thrush because it kills all the good bacteria too. Mrs. Bee wrote something about it here too:

I kept my milk and nursed LO through my first roud of antibiotics for mastitis. However the mastitis came back with a vengeance a few days after I finished that course so my doc had to prescribe me a stronger antibiotic that had not proven to be safe for nursing. I found conflicting information so I pumped and dumped through the 10-day course plus another 36 hours after to make sure it was out of my system. I also took probiotics religiously between my antibiotics to try to keep thrush away. I suggest asking your doc if it is safe for baby and also check out web resources. Some that I read up on was KellyMom (http://kellymom.com/bf/can-i-breastfeed/meds/aap-approved-meds/) and American Academy of Pediatrics (http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/108/3/776/T6.expansion.html).

@elisat: Thanks for the links! I don't see my antibiotic on there, but I did check with my pediatrician office that it was safe before taking.
I was just worried that feeding LO the pumped milk with antibiotics will increase her chances of getting thrush later.

@mamajaja - I was afraid of the same too! Didn't want a violent cycle of mastitis / thrush happening so I took a probiotic during my antibiotic treatment. The one I took has both acidophilus and bifidus (http://www.amazon.com/Natural-Factors-Acidophilus-Strength-Capsules/dp/B00016WW9U). I did some research and from what I found, acidophilus doesn't pass thru breastmilk but bifidus does, so at least LO was getting some probiotics too. I took the probiotic 3 times a day with each dose right smack in between my antibiotic dose. The instructions for taking probiotic during antibiotics is to take them as far apart from each other as possible. Hope this helps!
Oh and just to be safe now, I am still taking the probiotics and plan on continuing until after I wean. I'm afraid of thrush....

I was afraid of thrush too so I just pumped and dumped. Better safe than sorry. It was hard throwing away my liquid gold tho.

@banana - I know what you mean! I tossed over 250 oz while on meds and it sucked big time. =(

I was told to pump and dump because the antibiotics I was on wasn't safe for DD.

Even though the antibiotics were safe for my LO, I was extra cautious and decided to pump and dump.
