In the Chinese culture, once baby is a month old, they usually shave off all the baby's hair (toi mo) and supposedly it's suppose to grow back thicker. Did any of you do this? What i really want to know is if your LO's hair really grow back thicker or is this an old wives tale?

I didn't but my mom kept telling me to. She swears that it works. It seemed too scary to do!

I'm not Chinese. But at one month old there would have been nothing to shave.

Everyone told my mom to shave my head when I was a baby (we're Korean and a lot of Koreans do the same thing). She couldn't bear to do it, and I grew up to have long, thick, luscious hair! She's really glad she didn't do it.
From everything I've read, it's an old wives' tale. Shaving your legs often seems to make the stubble thicker only because you're cutting the hair off at the thickest point and when it grows back, it's thicker than when the leg hair ends are finer from growing out naturally. There doesn't seem to be any way to create hair follicles (or bald men everywhere would have something to think about!) so I would say it's an old wives tale.
Babies' hair almost always falls out sometime around 2 or 3 months, then grows back in about a month later. Even RJ was thinning quite a bit, but his hair was so long that it wasn't that noticeable (the long hairs on top covered the balding areas underneath. People asked us if we had shaved the hair on the sides and back! He was 2 months old!!) so I would say just wait and the hair will grow in naturally.

I plan to just play it by ear.. if her hair is really thin and weird I may cut it and then let it grow back but I have a feeling my baby will have a head full of hair at birth

We didn't. DS has fine, very blonde hair. It's starting to grow longer in the back and get thicker, but he never had any issues with his hair. He never really lost much of it and it's pretty even.

We sometimes need to shave babies heads in NICU for IV's (yes, babies sometimes get IV's in scalp veins if they don't have good veins for IV's in the hands/arms or feet). It doesn't grow back any thicker in the patches we have shaved, although sometimes the colour appears a little different in the shaved vs non-shaved patches for some reason.

How interesting. This is also fairly predominant in a lot of West African cultures, but I don't think we'll do it.

My dad did this to my brother and it grew back thicker and more even.. And for some strange reason lighter colored...

My mom shaved my head when I was a baby... she still SWEARS it made my hair thicker.
She also shaved my eyebrows when I was school-aged during winter break... I looked Whoopi-esque for quite awhile.

My mom shaved my head and I do have nice thick hair but despite repeated urging from my mom, I could not do it to my DD as she was so little being a preemie!
