Did your baby get a flat spot on their head? If so, what precautions did you take? ( rotating sides, side sleeping, tummy sleeping, helmet, etc..)
Did your lo wear a helmet? Did it help round out their head? And at what age did your lo wear it?

@jh524: Nope, no flat head here. He slept on his back in his crib until 5ish months when he tummy slept; didn't spend much time in his car seat/swing/etc.

@jh524: my baby had a flat side at birth (along with a subdural hematoma) and it's never really improved despite me being pretty aggressive with tummy time, flipping her for naps and diaper changes, using. Boppy noggin nest at night since birth and also in the stroller more recently.
So... A helmet may very well be in our future.
On the upside, LO just turned 4 months and rolls both ways like a demon so I guess the tummy time was good for that.

L ended up with a bit of a flat spot on his head. We notice around his 2month check up, and started rotating sides, making him look in the opposite direction, tummy time, etc. we took a head shaping class around 3.5 months and they kind of told us everything we were already doing. But even by then, things were already improving.
Now, I can barely tell!

Mine doesn't have a flat spot. I think it's because Ive worn him in a carrier a lot and he hates his swing. Also, I flip which way his head is for every nap/bedtime since he prefers looking out the door rather than at the wall. So one time I put his head on the left (when looking at the crib) and the next time I'll put him with his head on the right.

My LO developed a flat spot - he was breech for quite a bit and developed torticollis because of it, so no matter how we positioned him to sleep he would constantly turn to the side he preferred. We did different exercises to loosen his neck muscles, propped his mattress, and wedged a special tube on his side to force him in the opposite direction. Thankfully it all worked, but if it hadn't he would have been fitted for a helmet.

I felt like one side of her head was a little flat. She preferred to turn to the left. I tried alternating sides I held her on. In her crib she always rolled to the left. At 18 months now her head is fine.
I've worked with several babies with plagiocephaly and helmets. They've all turned out ok. It's best to get it looked at early, since the skull fuses at about 1 year.

DS had plagiocephaly and mild toricollis. We did physical therapy from about 2-6 months, and it corrected so he didn't need a helmet.
One thing I didn't know about is that besides just switching which side of the crib you lay the baby down in and encouraging tummy time, you should try to limit use of baby items like swings, bouncy chairs, carseats, etc... I used to put my DS in the bouncy chair a lot as a newborn so he could be on the same level with my DD and me as we played, but he always truned the same way in his chair, which contributed to his issues.

E has a bald patch on the back left of her head and it's definitely a little flat. The doctor said that it would just go away of it's own accord when she is a little older and not to worry. They don't do the helmet thing over here as I understand it (maybe you can access it privately) so if it doesn't go away her head will just be flat.....! Eek!!

No flat head, but major bald spots! I tried forcing him to sleep on the opposite side, and he just wouldn't have it. Few weeks later, he started rotating sides when he slept so the bald spots are starting to s.l.o.w.l.y recover.

no, but we let him sleep on his side pretty early on--like 10 weeks or so.

@jh524: No, but we made a conscious effort to give him LOTS of tummy time and then rotating his head when we put him down to sleep.

No, a very slight bit at one point but the doc wash concerned and it rounded out -- LO was in the rock n play for 5 months - but was an active sleeper - always turning back and forth - he love to lay flat on the floor and kick and he hated tummy time.

Yes, and I was so worried at the time. The doctor said to rotate and do more tummy time, and it went away.

Not really- she has the tiniest but of a flat spot now, but it's more bald than flat. I wasn't that great with doing tummy time early on, but she hated her stroller, swig, and bouncy chair, so he was held or in the carrier almost anytime she wasn't sleeping, and I think that's why she has such a nicely shaped head. Now she is good at tummy time and spends half the night on her side (she turns there herself).
I've known lots of people with varying degrees of flat heads- a few needed helmets, one had a special crib insert, and some just did extra things like putting a rolled blanket under one side to encourage them to look in the other direction in the stroller and swing.

Yes, despite repositioning and physical therapy, tummy time and the works our lo still had a pronounced flat spot. He was fitted for a helmet a few months back, I was so upset about it but he took to it without any problems and the spot is dramatically better. The helmet isn't my favorite thing but it has helped when nothing else did and I'm trying to take a big picture view of it all.
