Kind of. I played soccer for a year, did ballet for a year, and then it stopped until high school and mom flipped out when I didn't want to join cross country at my new school. I ended up doing it and loving it, but I did it because I wanted to, not because she wanted me to.

@Mrs. Bee: No. I always had to initiate the conversation of wanting to play on sports teams. I really wanted to play football and hockey but they refused. They said it was too rough of a sport (although looking back it may have been a financial issue). I was in baseball briefly (hated it but our neighbour was coaching the team and told me parents he needed me)

After much begging I was allowed to take martial arts. It stuck and I ended up becoming an instructor. Now as an adult I finally play hockey which is a lot of fun. @Mrs.Bee It's never too late to start, especially if you are somewhat athletic and in shape.

I think because I was very quiet and nerdy when I was younger my parents thought I was content focusing on my studies and didn't "need" sports. Pfffft

My mom only wanted me to play team sports, which I tried and didn't like, so I didn't play/do any kind of sports after that. I hope my kids want to play some kind of sport.

Nope! My mom was very overbearing and overprotective and hardly let me out of her sight. Going to play sports? Psh! She laughed in my face. I am definitely going to encourage my LO to try out whatever he wants to play.

Yes, but they wouldn't ever want to buy the equipment for it. Either that or we got the cheapest equipment possible which was just embarrassing when you show up for the high school team try outs and you have plastic cleats and a softball glove that's falling apart!

Yes, all the time. My father was very good at signing me up for different classes so I could have a taste of a wide range of sports and activities, and then let me decide which ones I wanted to continue.

They didn't encourage, per se, but they supported whatever we wanted to do.

I come from a very active family where everyone plays sports, so it was natural. I played competitive tennis all throughout high school and part of college. DH swam at the collegiete level, so we are definitely going to encourage LO to participate in sports.

not very much. I did ballet for about 8 years but did too many other activities (mainly violin) and my mom made me quit so I didn't get overburdened. I did softball during the summers as well, and almost played in high school but it was similarly too much with music and school. my parents stressed academics much more, but I do wish I'd been more active because I feel like I struggle with exercising now, it doens't come naturally to me. I'd rather read a book than run any day, lol

Yes, mine definitely did. I started out with t-ball when I was 4 or 5, and played baseball/softball until middle school. Once in middle school, I started playing basketball and kept up with that thru college. I also ran cross country for a few years in high school. The volleyball coaches at my school tried to get me on their team, too, but I never really liked volleyball! I've always been tall and athletic, so coaches were always pumped to see me at try outs.

We all played sports. I played teeball, then soft ball through 9th grade. I also took private piano lessons for 5 years & art lessons for 14 years. I played in band for 5 years, too.

My brother played baseball & soccer, and went on to play soccer in college. He had to quit from a major sports injury.

My sister played soccer her entire grade school and high school career as well.

Yes, they did, they encouraged us to try a variety of sports when we were pretty young - league soccer, softball, gymnastics, dance, horseback riding, etc. They wanted us to find an activity we liked. It wasn't specific to sports, they also encouraged us to take music lessons.

Both of my sisters loved dance and stuck with it for years, and my younger sister played softball for years.

I quit soccer, gymnastics, dance, piano, riding, and refused to try softball. Once we hit middle school my parents required us to be involved with at least one extracurricular activity per season. I had no musical talent and I'm horrible with sports that require hand-eye coordination, so I started running cross-country and track. I looooooved it and have never looked back! I'm really glad they had that rule because otherwise I probably never would have gone for it and may never have discovered running!

Yes, I started playing tball when I was young. I played softball and soccer as I got older.

My mom always made my sister and I play a sport or be involved in some kind of activity. All the way through high school. She said if we didn't pick one, she would pick one for us. She assumed we wouldn't get into trouble if we were involved in activities.'

ETA: I am NOT very athletic so this kind of sucked. Haha. But I made wonderful friends and have fairly wonderful memories.

I guess they did. Not really a sport, but I danced for 7 or so years. I did play volleyball a bit (quit in HS though because I hated the coach) softball, curling and loved badminton (still do!). They never "made" me do anything, but definitely encouraged me in the sports I liked.
