My husband is taking me for dim sum for lunch today! What are some of your favorite things to get when you go for dim sum?

Each place has their specialty (of the typical dim sum fare, some places make a few dishes really, really good, while others will make it seem just OK). But I tend to always order shrimp sui mai, stuffed crab claw, BBQ. I really like turnip cake, but my local place back home doesn't make it great, so I just skip it.
My suggestion is to be adventurous and try what looks good =)

Ha gow, Shu mai, char su, chicken feet, those little lotus leaf rice packets. Gah! I haven't had dim sum in forever! Oh and Jin deui for dessert!

Oooh! We've been once the day after a wedding, it was so good! I'm kind of scared to go again without a translator, the bride was great at helping us figure out what to get. I really remember these rolls with what seemed like refried beans inside, those were my favorites, but I have zero grasp on what anything was called.

Yum! We rarely get to have it because DH has a sensitive stomach. Always a treat when we do get it!

@autumnlove: Can you tell I used to date a Cantonese guy?! I think his mom tried to scare me away by taking me to Dim Sum. Once she saw me dive in, she was sold (and finally stopped calling me white devil in Cantonese... I knew what she was saying!!!).

Yup, he drove me halfway across the state to get it... and he suffered through it.
I couldn't convince him to get the chicken feet, though. Haha. Steamed pork buns are SO GOOD.

ooh dim sum... we were supposed to go next weekend (the place we lake is over an hour away, so we don't get to go very often) & I have no idea what I'm eating when we go. we basically just order one of everything that looks good & eat it. so good.

@autumnlove: Yup... I think she was also slightly impressed that I figured out what she was saying and that it wasn't very nice fairly quickly. I always dated Asian guys before Mr. Jacks and thought I'd have beautiful mixed race babies, so it was quite a treat to find out that Maisie was 1/4 Asian!

Love dim sum... My favorite dim sum desserts are don tats (egg custard) and almond jelly.

OMG...you guys are killing me! I love, love, love dim sum but unfortunately I live in a city that doesn't have a single dim sum restaurant
My mom is coming to visit next month so I'll try to talk her into going to NYC Chinatown to have dim sum. Growing up we use to go to Chinatown every weekend to have dim sum and I just took it for granted. Never again will I do that. Don tat, shu mai, nor mai fon, char sui bao, har gow... oh my!
