I've noticed lately, both here on hellobee and just in society in general, that there are a LOT of misconceptions about home birth. I'm not trying to talk people into having a home birth, just trying to raise some awareness about what a home birth actually means. Those who have had home births or have researched them, feel free to add other facts!

1. Midwives ARE medical professionals. I always hear the sentence "I would want to be in the hospital where there are medical professionals if there was an emergency." While there are some emergencies that couldn't be handled in a home environment, midwives are highly trained medical professionals that have been trained in emergency procedures and know how to handle complications.

2. Midwives do carry drugs and equipment for emergency situations.
Most midwives carry oxygen, fetal monitors, neonatal resuscitation equipment, suctioning equipment, IV equipment, suture materials, local anesthetics, anti-hemorrhagic and other drugs (pitocin, misoprostol, methergine, epinephrine, magnesium sulfate, terbutaline, and antibiotics), etc.

3. Midwives often have assistants, who are also well-trained and capable of assisting in an emergency. So there are "other hands".

4. There are far less complications in the average home birth than in the average hospital birth, partially because of less interventions but mostly because home birth midwives DO NOT TAKE HIGH RISK CLIENTS! Obviously they are very careful to only provide home birth as an option to those who are low risk and likely to have an uncomplicated birth.

5. Home birth is not really messy. The midwife and her assistant typically cleans everything up before they leave, and they prepare your birthing space before hand to make sure that there is no damage and no serious mess.

Feel free to add other common misconceptions or ask questions! Again, not trying to push home birth onto anyone (it's not for everyone, and I understand and respect that), just trying to dispel the myths surrounding it.
