Such a dumb question and I feel like he is giving her a hard time but I over heard my two friends planning their trip to Japan and what to wear on the plane. Is it considered disrespectful to wear sweatpants in the airport in Japan?

If I were traveling that far away, I would wear sweatpants. I'm not sure if it is disrespectful or not...but wearing jeans on a very long flight does not sound comfortable to me.

I traveled to Vietnam and had a layover in Taiwan. I wore sweat pants. If I'm going to be on a plane for 13+ hours, I'm going to wear something comfortable.

I have no clue if it's disrespectful, but on that long of a flight I think comfort is key.

We went to Japan last year for Thanksgiving and I'm fairly certain I flew there and home wearing sweatpants! I've never heard of it being disrespectful...

@LindsayInNY: I really think he was giving her shit. I have never heard of that either. I'm going to tell her again. I already tried, but she believed him

@BabyMats: Personally, DH and I are white and it was obvious that we were tourists so I didn't really care what people thought (I have a friend who lives there but she speaks Japanese and people can tell she isn't a tourist). Most Japanese females are very into fashion and would not wear sweatpants but by personal preference, not because it's disrespectful in any way.

I'd be all about the comfort for that long of a flight. You could always bring a slick pair of pants or nice leggings in your carry-on and switch in the bathroom before descent.

@indi: I told her to do that butt she said it's too much trouble
@LindsayInNY: she said she is going to sport the jeans. She is Chinese and her husband is Hawaiian. Obvious tourists as well. She is funny

@BabyMats: I wonder where her husband got that idea from?! That's going to be one long flight in jeans =/

@LindsayInNY: it was another friend not even her husband that said that

Weird that she's putting more importance into someone's very random and probably inaccurate "advice" than her own comfort. I mean, it's an airport filled with complete strangers she will likely never see again. Why would anyone even care what she's wearing to an international flight?! Is she a celebrity? Because that's the only reason why I'd think it would matter. Disrespectful to her fans that expect to see her done up?

@SugarplumsMom: lol..I love that...seriously..she is not a celebrity. But I agree and I felt from the beginning that it was a load of crap

I can see how it would be against the norm to wear sweatpants in certain Asian cities because they tend to be much more dressed up than we are...like I would feel awkward wearing sweats in parts of Seoul. Not because it's disrespectful per se, but because women there are very obvious about giving each other looks and comments when someone isn't wearing the right thing. But in the airport...you're leaving the local community and about to get on the plane for a long uncomfortable flight. Those rules don't apply so much anymore.

Well, I'm going to be disrespecting people when I fly home through japan in a few weeks. 15 hour flight == Sweatpants all the way!

I remember when I flew to China I was told that tank tops would have been disrespectful and to make sure to have sleeves, but I was with a group. I've never heard of this as a Japanese no-no but I wouldn't be surprised. Even if I don't know people I think it's important to be respectful so I'd look into it but I don't think it's a big deal for air travel.

This thread makes me feel like the only person who doesn't wear sweatpants to fly. But I also don't own any sweatpants, so I guess that explains that.

My husband's family is Japanese. We went to visit a few years ago and no one wore sweatpants. We all dressed nicely and brought nice clothes to wear while there.

just wear leggings and a comfy but nice tunic!
looks put together and just as comfy as sweats

Having lived in Japan for several years, I can tell you that i's feel very out if place in the airport/checking in to a hotel in sweats/yoga pants . On my flights to/from Tokyo it was common to see Japanese women changing outfits and doing full hair and makeup prior to landing (I'm talking about battery-powered curling irons!). I don't think disrespectful is the right word but I think it would be considered odd, even for a tourist, by locals.
That said, she should definitely do what makes her comfortable. Maybe wear sweats in the plane but change to something like leggings and a tunic sweater before landing, or I guess wear that the whole time if she thinks changing is a hassle. It may be superficial but I do think your appearance can greatly affect how you are treated when you travel (in terms of level if service received, upgrades, etc.) - looking pulled together seems to help convey your expectations of good service, where as looking relaxed/like you are at home sends more of an "I don't care just let me sleep!" Message.

I personally wouldn't travel in sweatpants, and seriously, I agree with @PinkElephant, how you are dressed makes a difference in how you are treated. There are other options aside from sweatpants (and I know we're all thinking the gathered at the ankle, light gray with words down the side version).

I don't wear sweatpants out of the house unless I am en route to/from the gym. So no, I would not wear them on a flight.

@Anagram: I don't wear sweatpants either! I usually wear my comfiest pair of jeans!

I am all about comfort while flying, especially if it's a long, international flight. However, I do agree w/PPs that how you're dressed does influence how you're treated.
When I flew to Korea, I wore black yoga pants and a fitted zip-up hoodie. Both items were new so they looked nice, and I was still super comfy throughout the entire 11-hour flight! Win Win

I always try to dress "nicely" when travelling internationally. That being said, it's usually lululemon leggings, nice flats, a big sweater, and a scarf. Comfortable, warm, but I don't look like I just rolled out of bed. I would never wear sweats.

@Anagram: I have never worn sweatpants on any flight . . . and I used to travel 40 weeks a year for work.

@MrsKoala: @MsLipGloss: Glad I'm not alone! I think it's because my dad was a pilot for American, so growing up we only flew standby and they have a dress code for Standby passengers (no gym wear, no sleep wear, no flip flops, etc). My parents also made us dress for first class (stricter dress code for standby--like no jeans and no trainers!) because we were a big family so we always took available first class seats too, so we could all get on the flight.
So I still sort of dress that way...except now I'd wear jeans at least. But jeans and a nice top.

@anagram, true story, I flew business class for work once and it was an overnight flight to Europe, so i had yoga pants on. The flight attendant didn't believe I was traveling business until i handed her my ticket and tried to argue with me about how I needed to wait my turn.
PS my favorite sweatpants are the Under Armor performance ones. They don't look like sweatpants off the bat.

@Anagram: @MsLipGloss: Me neither...I don't own sweatpants and would never wear them on a flight if I did. I guess I prefer to dress up more in general.
eggplant / 11716 posts
@blackbird: that's just silly on the flight attendant's part because I see paying passengers in first and business wearing all kinds of stuff, especially with all the ways to get upgrades these days. Although I guess first and business to tend to skew slightly dressier.

@anagram, i think it was more that I was 22 years old, trying to board with a bunch of older men
