We bought it as a present for some family members interested in genealogy. It was really fun and surprising!

We had it done after our 3rd miscarriage. It was really interesting, though it didn't help explain anything.

Oh maybe I misunderstood. I thought you were talking about something like 23 and me.

It might be me who misunderstood! I was thinking that would make an interesting present, lol.

@Boogs: Well, that was what we used. I would caution that for people who are European, it may not give a ton of information.

I've always wanted to do this but I would need to enlist my Dad to help and testing is not cheap. I became interested in testing after watching African American Lives on PBS with Henry Gates and he took a DNA test and found out that he had more European DNA than African. I think it he had double the amount of European DNA. So cool!

Yes I've been interested but don't want to pay the $100-200. Maybe if it drops down to $40-50 since I strongly suspect that it will just tell me that I'm 100% Asian.

@mrsjazz: that was a great series! He was something like 30% African admixture, right? His heritage was mostly Irish if I remember. I think the test that does African admixture best is one of the more expensive ones. 23 and me is like $99, I think.
We're definitely going to do one for M so she can get a better read on her African heritage. Her birth family really has no information going back more than a generation.

We did! Because we're Jewish, my OB suggested I do it before TTC. But their "way" was $300/person and didn't have nearly as much info as 23 & Me. I think the info we got is very useful, and I was able to find out that DH also has MTHFR through it. I was also able to rule out some potential causes for the m/cs by searching the raw data.

@Mrs. Jacks: He's 60% Irish, 34% African, and 6% Asian. Crazy! Ever since that series I've been hooked on genealogy. It's so fascinating, especially if you get a surprise like Gates did--here's a man who devotes his life to African-American studies and then finds out that he's mostly Irish.
My dad thinks it's a waste of money so I need to convince him.

@mrsjazz: my parents did too so I just bought it for them
