We are moving into a small two bedroom apparent. DS will be 5 months when we move and has always slept in the same room as us. I am sure I am over worried, the rooms are next to each other. Should we get a monitor?

If you could hear him crying from anywhere in the apartment then no, you don't NEED a monitor. Whether or not you want a monitor will probably depend on how your kid sleeps. Mine is still a moderately crappy sleeper for her age and it really helps me that I can see her. She makes sort of a lot of noise in her sleep but I always know that if she sits up she is probably UP. If I get to her quickly (after she sits up, before she starts wailing) I can usually get her back to sleep really fast. If I miss the window and she is crying then it can take for-ev-er to get her to sleep. So I'm glad I have a video monitor because it makes my life easier and gets me more sleep. But if your kid is a pretty good sleeper then probably not.

I agree with Mae. It's not essential in your case but could be helpful. Video has helped us a lot with knowing what is a fake wake up and what is "I need you" so we didn't disturb him. Now at 2 it's even more useful because he will fuss in his sleep sometimes (like a nightmare) but isn't really awake AND we can look to see if he got out of bed (just converted the crib!)
One other thing to think about is if you think you'll be watching TV or something and wondering "was that a cry?" We do that sometimes and like to check!

I would buy a simple video monitor for the reasons stated above, but you don't need anything fancy! Our room is right across from LO's nursery, and I turn the monitor off when we go to bed now and only turn on if he wakes me up crying.

You could get by without one but I felt more comfortable with one, especially a video one.

We didn't need one when LO was a baby. We've used ours more since LO became a toddler, especially after the big girl bed transition. I like to figure out what caused random thuds I hear from her room. Also LO is a bad waker-upper so we need to make sure she is standing before we open her door or she is super grump.

Really depends! You wouldn't NEED one in this situation, but it was always reassuring to me to be able to hear everything in her room, especially if I were making noise in the kitchen or something. We just have an audio monitor, and its been great.

There is a great app for android we use called munchkin monitor. It is a video monitoring app which uses your wifi to stream audio and video between two devices. You need two andriod devices (phone, tablet etc) and I think you could use a computer as well. You don't NEED a video monitor but it's always helpful when you want to spy on your LO!

We just have an audio monitor and the only time we use it is if we are outside or in the basement. Other than that if he is really awake we can here him. He fusses and moves a lot in his sleep and we don't need to hear that.

We live in a 2 bedroom and our video monitor broke when LO was about a year old---we had a night of panic, and then we realized we don't need it at all.
Now we sleep with LOs door closed, and our door just cracked open and she has a white noise machine in her room and we have one in our room and we can STILL hear when she wakes up/cries/calls for us, etc.
But we can't hear her random coughs or noises, which used to wake me up over the monitor before. Our video monitor made me a little paranoid/overly attentive with her sleep I think. But that's probably just my personality.

We actually used our monitor for video only when we lived in 600 sq ft: 2 bed. DD was in our room for 5 months and we had it in the room to watch her and then moved it into her room when she went to the crib. It was more to see what she was up to than hear her because I could hear her with both bedroom doors closed when she actually needed me.

I agree that you don't need one, but I sure love my video monitor! We almost never use the sound on it since I can hear here everywhere in the condo except the shower, by I do like seeing her. I do like having it with sound when I take a shower while she naps- but to be fair, that's really not necessary either, since after the first few months I would just let her cry for the few minutes it takes me to finish my shower anyway. It's more for my own peace of mind that I can take a nice long shower without worrying that she is awake and crying.
I will also say it's nice to have a cheap sound monitor for when we travel and stay at someone's house that is bigger and I can't actually hear her everywhere.

I vote you wait until you feel like you need it. I wish we had done that, ours gets used but mostly because we have it not because we need it right now.
