DD has one of those swimming suits with the swim diaper sewn in. The tag says no other swim diaper needed, but she was definitely damp by the time we got to the pool this morning. Is this normal with reusable swim diapers?

No swim diaper out there is designed to hold pee, whether it's disposable or reusable. If you think about it, there would have to be an airtight seal (ouch!) on the diaper for that to be possible since the diaper can't tell the difference between pee and regular water and would just soak everything up. Totally a pain, but you just have to wait until you're at the pool or beach to get them changed so they don't pee in the carseat!

Oh jeez. Okay, totally makes sense but they really should come with a warning for idiots like me!

I agree, they should come with a warning! Nowhere on my iplay swim diaper does it say that it wont hold in pee, in fact it states "contains leaks - in and out of the water" but a simple test of pouring water inside the diaper proves otherwise

@Zbug: You're not an idiot! I only know this from being on HB. I used to be a camp counselor and we were ask the parents to bring the little ones in the swim diaper already. I promise not one of us knew that they weren't holding the pee!

@Zbug: the first time we put LO in her swim diaper and bathing suit, I picked her up and she peed all over me... It took me a while to figure out what was happening!

Yep - even the thickest swim diapers don't hold in liquids...just solids. I'm sure a bunch of us have learned the hard way!

Not an idiot! I just know it because I researched swim diapers back when L started swim lessons. And after that I was super careful to not ingest any of the pool water...ugh!

@Zbug: I had no idea either!! I took C to the pool last month, and by the time we got to the pool he had peed through his swim diaper and trunks, all over the carseat.

I learned it from HB too!
@Foodnerd81: I don't know why but this is hysterical to me!

Well I got pee all over me when I carried her to the pool. Of course I didn't actually bother to change my clothes when we got back home. At least I'm not the only clueless one!

LOL I didn't know either. In fact I was talking to LO's daycare teacher who said that I should bring swim diapers for when they do sprinkler time and I think she didn't realize those diapers don't hold pee and are meant to not weigh babies down when they are immersed in water.

@swedishfish: the weird thing is I don't remember getting peed on or cleaning up any messes. They were older kids, like 2-3, so maybe they weren't peeing so often?

I always put on the swim diaper right before getting in the pool.

Yeah... no. I learned this the hard way too with one the iplays. DH wanted to take DD swimming and I thought I was being so helpful putting her in her swim stuff under her clothes, so he could just take off her sweatsuit and go straight to the pool.
He arrived with a car seat full of pee.

Whoa, I didn't know this and have always changed DS into his swim diaper at home before heading to the pool! Guess I've just been lucky so far... won't be testing my luck anymore!

@Beehive: Yes, I considered myself very lucky that I found this out before an accident happened! They really need a different name for it - 'diaper' is very misleading in this context.

I assumed they didn't because our Y wants kids who aren't potty trained to wear a regular diaper with a swim diaper over it.
