Depends on if you're getting everyone else gifts too.. If you got things for a lot of ppl in your dept and it's obvious that you didn't get any for the supervisor then I would say just get him/her something too. And I'd just go with something generic like sweets, or bottle of wine..

I don't buy "up"

Normally I would say no and that I don't give gifts but apparently at my new company you do. So I'm sure I'll go in together with his other direct reports and give him a gift card to somewhere. It pained me to have to get him a boss's day card. . .

I looove my supervisor, and normally the 3 of us that are under her, pitch in on a gift for her. It's not too much normally just like $20. But come the holidays we always get her a gift, because she always gets us very nice things!

Absolutely. I absolutely buy up! I think it's weird if a supervisor gets you something and you have nothing for him or her. I definitely gift in both directions, including people I like and some not so much.

It would never occur to me to buy holiday gifts for coworkers.

Our department typically pitches in for a gift card for our supervisor. We don't buy for any other supervisor other than our own.
