It depends on the context. If I can attribute it to user error, then I'll go ahead. If there are hundreds of positives and one or two negatives, I won't count them.

If it's in the store, I'd go check it out yourself and see if the bad reviews can be substantiated. I also look at the context of the reviews and try to take them with a grain of salt.

Depends, if the bad reviews mentioned things I am worried about too I won't purchase the item.

I usually look at the ratio and percentage of bad to good reviews.
On amazon, I look at the combined number for 4 and 5 star review vs the 3, 2, 1 reviews and assess the risk. Good thing amazon has a great return policy!
I also skim to see common complaints. Sometimes the 1 stars are for "I can find this cheaper at Target", and not really attributed to the product itself.

I'd check it out in the store. In general, I'm leery of bikes that you buy at Target/Walmart, as my experiences haven't been great (the bikes were very heavy, cheap, and my gearshift didn't work). You'll get a much better bike at a bike shop, and it will have been put together by people who are very skilled rather than someone who doesn't do that kind of thing regularly.

I always read the 1-stars to see what they complained about.
Like recently I wanted to get an external hard drive and it had a ton of bad reviews but all of them had to deal with mac book users and I had a pc. So I ended up getting it and it works great for me.
I also do this with restaurants ... if all the one stars are about service and not food... we still tend to go.

For me, it depends on what the reviews say and how many there are compared to positive reviews.
