Our 3 year old is sleeping off a bug of some sort this morning. We haven't called daycare yet because we're waiting to see if she wakes up healthy or sick. If she's going to be out all day I'll call but I typically don't call if we're going to be late.

Yes. I'm a teacher so I have a pretty set start time. If I don't drop him off by a certain time (which is about 20 minutes later than my normal time) they call to make sure everything is ok.

Like others have said - generally if I am going to me 30 or more minutes late I call - otherwise they will worry and call me!

Only if I'm going to be way late. Like hours. Or absent. Eta: our start time typically varies by as much as a half hour anyway.

Yep, we call (or more likely just tell them when we drop off the other kid). It's even more important for us to tell them when we're going to be late versus not show up at all. They need to ensure they have the correct teacher ratio, and my showing up at 10:30 can screw that up if they haven't planned for it!

No, but she is on a flex schedule of sorts so we pay no matter what and they have different "students" different times, different days, so it's not like they'd be looking for her.

We'll shoot her a text and let her know whats up, in your case she'd be waiting to see if he'd be in or not.

Yes, if he'll be more than like 15 minutes late, because he eats breakfast there and I want to let them know to save him a plate if we're running late or that they don't need to if he's going in really late. And they call and check in if he's more than 30 minutes late with no call.

yep! it's one of the policies of our center that we tell them if she's going to be out or there after the drop off period ends at 9:30am

Yes, our center wants a call if LOs will be more than 15 minutes late. I can't blame them-- I would want a call too. A lot of times they have moved onto other activities as most kids get dropped off in a short time period at our daycare.

No. I used to but one day I forgot and it didn't seem like a big deal so I stopped. But DS1 is out often when DH is off of work. I think they are used to it.

Yes, I call either way. The schools start time is 9am, and activities officially begin at that time (circle time, etc). it is helpful for the teachers to know how many kids they will have all day. They also call if a child is supposed to be in, but doesn't show up. It's a safeguard to make sure that child is ok - that he hasn't been left in the car (asleep) or something.

I call if we're going to be more than an hour or so past or usual time so that they know. If we're more than a couple hours late, they'll call to find out if she is coming. It's helpful for them for staffing reasons. And I absolutely call ASAP if I know she's going to be out all day.

I let them know as soon as I know. Usually by 8am, we drop off at 7. My in laws take forever to decide their plans when they visit and it drives me nuts.
LO's first daycare provider had a child in her care that was forgotten in a parents' car during the work day. She was adamant that we call when we do something out of the routine so she knows everyone is safe.

Sometimes... I usually try and let them know the day before if I am planning for him to be out. If he is sick I call.

@Corduroy: I always call for that reason. Those kid in car stories terrify me and having daycare wonder where we are is one of my safety nets so that it never happens to my kid.

Yes because they have class size ratios that determine how many teachers go where--so even if one is missing the teacher:child ratio could be different.

At the center we are going to use we don't have to but its up to us. If we tell them we plan to call if we'll be late/skipping then they will call us if we don't show (make sure kid doesn't get left in a car). But if your schedule is weird and you don't want to deal with that you can just tell them you'll be there when/if you get there and thats fine too.

I text her teacher if we are going to be more than 30 minutes late or if she is not coming.

It looks like we are in the minority- we don't call if she will be out. It doesn't affect the teacher ratio. I only call if she is diagnosed with something contagious and will be out an extended amount of time. If we will be late be if an appt I tell them the day before. She's never gone in late that we weren't expecting.

We also call if she'll be more than a half hour late or out for the day.

@mediagirl: I do! They worry. But also his other place is a school and they require a call if they will arrive after 8 15.
