Some people can pull this off, and other's can't... I am squarely in the camp of those who can not.
Is there anyone out there that can pull this off? Do you call people that you don't know well nicknames such as honey, baby, or sugar?

I also cannot pull this off! I just feel silly and awkward...I don't really use pet names for anyone but Dh and my niece/nephew. I don't mind when other people do it though, unless it's obviously condescending or patronizing.

Only for chidren.
I have gotten used to other people doing this to me because it's more common in the South.

If they are young children then it comes naturally to call them darling or sweetheart even if I dont know them, but I dont this for adults

I don't and I don't like being called any of the above. Something about it gets me so angry, especially if it's from someone I don't know.

I don't do it-- I barely even call my close friends by any of those nicknames! I think the only one I use is "doll"-- I blame this on Scott Disick and watching too much Kardashian shows

I get called that all the time, from the cashier in the grocery store to the nurse at the doctor's office. Its really common in the south, but it doesn't bother me...I guess because I'm so used to it.
I usually don't call other people those names, except for my pre-k students. I call them "honey, shug, sweetheart" all the time.

I never used to do it and got offended when people did it to me BUT my boss does it all the time and I'm afraid I've started! If I'm on the phone, I'll say "hun" - but I don't even know I'm doing it

I don't like calling people those things ... only the DD.

I work in a bridal shop in sales and when i forget the brides name i usually call her sweetie or sweetheart. as in "Alright sweetheart step up and lets have a look at this dress"

I don't do it. And I find it offensive if someone does it to me. When is it ok to call someone you don't know baby? Sometimes some of the older guys in my office call me kiddo and it drives me nuts!

I definitely can’t pull it off and I don’t really like when I get called those things by someone who isn’t close to me. It’s not very common in my area though.

@mrskc: It can be very condescending when someone older says something like that!! That really bothers me.
I think it just depends who is calling you that. If they mean it in a nice, friendly, complimenting way, I don't mind. But if it's something like that - no way.

No way. I also can't hug people unless I'm close to them. I have a friend who can use these names and hug random people. It works for her, not for me.

Yeah, I totally do! But I"m very specific with it:
Friends (women): "Hey girl!" or "Hey girlfriend!"
Friends who are moms: "Hey mama" or "Hey baby mama"
Friends (men): "Waddup homie!"
Children (boys): "Hey buddy!" or "Hey dude!"
Children (girls): "Hey sweetie!"
But only if I know them pretty well. Otherwise, I don't call them anything.

@banana: HAHA
I do and can. But only when I feel like it.

Some students in my school whose names I don't know, or I've forgotten, I'll call them "hun."

I don't do it, and I'd appreciate it if no one else would do it to me.
It feels demeaning.
bananas / 9628 posts
i do, but only when it feels appropriate, not everyone all the time. i can pull it off most of the time though, i have this obnoxiously sweet comforting mama bear way about me =P

No and I'm always kind of awkward when people call me silly names.

Uhhh, I guess old ladies like my grandmother or grandfather's age could call me Honey or Sweetheart and I wouldn't be offended.
I don't think anyone else could say those nicknames to me unless it was a joke or something.
GOLD / pomelo / 5167 posts
Oh no! I can't pull it off, and actually I don't really think it's possible to do so. It's a huge pet peeve of mine.
egh... you don't know me, so don't call me honey or sweetie or babe or dude... eghhhhhhhhhh
