Is your house ready for visitors?

Ugh, not usually. I typically have the living area relatively neat, but our kitchen is usually a disaster. Plus, when I'm home during the day, I'm typically in my pyjamas - totally not ready for visitors.

i don't invite ppl in that 'drop by'. that's right, i will go outside & talk to MIL, but i won't invite her in. it encourages it if you let them in. i'm a b*tch also we live on the top floor of our building, so i often choose not to answer the buzzer if i'm not expecting anyone.

haha. I don't mind unexpected visitors.
house isn't clean, but it's not a super mess either!
it's okay! they're family!!

My house is always ready for visitors but I'm not! I always roll up to unexpected visitors with no makeup on and no bra on. Usually also wearing yoga pants or sweatpants. Klassy!

My house is usually a mess. I need to really get better at keeping it organized since we're about to go on the market.

@yoursilverlining: I had to put some shorts on when they rang the doorbell!

If it's just family, I don't really care.. But no, the house is not guest ready, I'd be so embarrassed if friends came over unannounced.

I usually don't care. The house is always a mess, and the LO is always my excuse. I just have to remember to put a bra on before I answer the door.

My house is clean, almost always. But I despise unannounced visitors - I'm an introvert, and I don't always feel like chatting. A good friend recently moved really close to me, and I run in to her all the time. It's always nice to see her, but it drains my energy when I'm not ready for it.

I do not entertain people who do not call first. My house is clean but it is soooo inconsiderate.
I will drop like a ninja and army crawl somewhere where nobody can see me if looking through the door windows.

We live in close quarters with neighbors we love so I'm fine and love drop ins!

@mrs. bird: I love this. I SHOULD do this next time someone comes over unannounced!
IL's always stop by unannounced - it drives me mad.

I dislike unannounced visitors. I'm usually in my pajamas or underwear if I haven't gone anywhere that day. My house is usually clean but I am rarely presentable.

I didn't used to mind, but now that I'm getting older and work from home, it's kind of annoying and I see it as "my turf". Lol it's, silly but true. I want a chance to do a quick clean (read: throw everything in the bedroom) before guests come over.

@Reese: Lol, ditto:). I just wont answer, and I'll either fake like I'm not home if my car's in the garage, or just hide out in the nursery and later be all, "Oh, that was you that rang the doirbell? I was nursing DD and couldnt go downstairs to answer!"

We don't live somewhere where people just drop by. If we did, it would depend on who it is if I would have a minor freak out or not. Our house is generally pretty clean, but I like to have things like drinks and snacks on hand, otherwise I feel like a bad hostess!

Hate it!! Our place is usually a mess and I'm usually just in yoga pants and a tank top. We do not do pop ins!!
bananas / 9973 posts
Rarely happens. If so, it's usually just my family or my BFF. So, whatever. But I'd still prefer advanced notice since I'm usually just in a bra these days at home!

It never happens, but we just had BIL over for the night and although the area outside of the guestroom is ridiculous, I tried to spiffy up the room and he said he had the best sleep in ages! I feel so happy to hear that

People call first, period. I can overlook the mess but people generally do not swing by without a heads up and a reason
nectarine / 2163 posts
wouldn't bother me. but, people don't. i don't know many people in this area, and the few that i do know (generally from church) will just about always call or email first.

I definitely care! I'm usually walking around the house in PJ pants and a T-shirt with no bra on, and if LO is having a bad day with fussiness the house may be a wreck, so if the doorbell rings I have to do a mad dash to throw on clothes and straighten a bit. Although after it happened a couple of times with different family members, I just stopped answering the door (luckily our house is setup so that there are no windows in the front of the house that face into our living room or kitchen or anything.) Later when it is a good time I'll call and say I was sleeping or showering or whatever. People quickly learn to call first when you do that!
My MIL, SIL, and nephew almost did a drop-in the other day and thank goodness my SIL thought to text first, because 'd just gotten LO down for a nap after 3 straight hours of crying (we're going through a growth spurt and early teething at the same time!), and I think I would've cried if the doorbell or my 2 year old nephew had woken him up!

I just ask that I get a warning...I don't mind if FIL comes over, but I feel like I need to prepare mentally, for some reason. He acts like I'm the bad guy about it, but just a heads up is good. He doesn't have to ask...just warn me.

I haaaaaaaaaaate when people stop by unannounced. The house is usually clean enough (except while I was in the first tri--ha) but I run around in a tank and my underwear... and surprise visitors actually tick me off. Grrrrrr! They don't bother dh though!

I get suppppper annoyed when people just drop by. My in-laws do this ALL the time. ALthough the house is usually clean, I've been in just a nursing bra, or my pjs and it just makes me uncomfortable. People dropping by unannounced was normal when DH was growing up so he doesn't think it's a big deal.

We grew up not knocking on doors. We just walk in each others houses, and that's the norm. If my husband goes to my parents house without me, he doesn't ring the bell, he just goes in. Same with any of my aunts & uncles houses, and same with our house. If we are expecting visitors, they just walk in. No door bell necessary.
That said, my mom popped over unannounced twice.
Once, my husband was in his underwear. I've never seen him run so fast.
The second time (because she didn't learn her damn lesson) we weren't even home.
We haven't had any unexpected visitors since.

I love having people drop by! My house is rarely in shape for visitors, but I just tell myself it makes it feel lived in and homey
wonderful pea / 17279 posts
We don't get them. But I would care. Our house isn't guest ready every moment of the day.

I'm dreading this. My MIL requested permission for FIL to come over today but I already have to deal with her and a repair man for the phone. I don't want to deal with FIL too. Spoke with DH about it last night and he agreed so I sent an email back to his mom saying no (DH had to proof read it just to make sure I didn't somehow piss them off, long story). Here's hoping she honors the response. If not I will ask him to leave. I've got enough on my plate without being on my best manners. And no, having him over while the repair man is here wouldn't help at. All. He doesn't ever listen to me about the kids.

I don't like unannounced guests at all. My house is always clean, but not always up to the standards that I have when I have guests. I am really picky about what my house looks like when I have people come over. DH thinks that I am ridiculous about it, but I can't help it. My mother is the same way.
watermelon / 14467 posts
I don't like it one bit. I especially hate when my parents call and say "We're in your area, can we come by in 5 minutes?" Usually that happens right after we've had sexy time and I'm like "S***! Pick up everything NOW!"
