Inevitably, during every nursing session, A (12 days old) poops. I swear, I think she poops instead of burps. She also almost always passes out cold, so I hate to wake her to change her. But I worry about her little booty getting angry. Do you change a poopy diaper in the middle of a feeding session, or just wait until LOL wakes for the next feeding? FWIW, she's still up every 3-4 hours.

My daughter pooped during every feed... I think the eating causes reflexive pooping in newborns? I tried to keep her awake during feeds, then change her and put her down. I guess you could also change her between breasts!

My pediatrician said to just put a thick layer of diaper cream on if she's up pretty frequently anyway. With my older daughter I did usually change her between sides of she pooped though.

Yes. Either during the feed or right after. Didn't want LO sitting in a poopy diaper for too long!

Yup. But my lo is also not one to fall asleep with a poopy diaper and never pooped that often. With a girl I would be worried about UTIs though, however unnecessarily.

I always changed a poop right away. I also often changed her between changing breasts in the early days just to keep her awake longer so that she would eat more.

At 3.5 weeks over here, and about 50% of his diaper changes are intentionally between breadts. It helps us remember to stay "regular"/not go too long with diapers, and wake him between breasts so he finishes a solid feed instead of just snacking.

My DD slept through diaper changes when she was that little, so I'd finish feeding her and then change her -- it didn't seem to make any difference to her, and it was easier on me to not get up in the middle of a feeding. But I had oversupply so we did block feeding for awhile and only one breast at a time until she was over a year old, so I didn't have a natural break in the middle of a feeding.

I always changed her when she did this as a newborn. I would change her, nurse from one side or until she pooped, nurse again, usually to sleep. But at 12 days old, nursing also took a long time. I read somewhere that when newborns eat, they trigger hormones that cause them to poop. Making more room I guess.

I did hoping to keep him awake during feedings because he could not get a full feeding ever. Like he could fall asleep within 20 seconds and then would wake up 20 minutes later pissed off that he was hungry. We would change before the feeding (pee), mid feeding (poo), and then sometimes he would poop again after! So many diaper changes.

I changed it with this LO (now 4.5 months old).... His little bum would get really irritated if I waited. He was like a poop monster, constantly popping!

We did in an effort to keep him awake. Feed one side then DS would take him and change him, feed the other side.

@Foodnerd81: our doctor said the same thing for an ebf baby in those early days. There was a point where it changed odor and I felt the need to change each time.

@Happygal: well after she told me this, my younger changed to pooping only once, maybe twice a day, and so they were big poops that couldn't wait anyway. But if it was those frequent little ones I'd have been ok waiting.

My lo still poops during or after feeds! Not as often now but still once or twice a day! She's almost 11 months!

My 5 week old poops during every feeding pretty much. I change his diaper mid Feeding to wake him up and get him on the other breast.

In those early days, LO had a hard time staying awake for nursing so I definitely changed him mid way.

I would nurse on one side, change the diaper, then nurse on the other side.

We often changed halfway through a feed after the poop at that age. That way we did t have to wake her, and it kept her awake enough to finish her feed. But I'd never leave a poopy diaper...recipe for a rash and mess!

I didn't with my first two without problem but my third is (was!) the shart queen and has very sensitive hiney skin. If I left her for a minute she's get red. Thankfully now at almost six weeks she's not pooping at night anymore..
