When my British husband would come visit me in Texas while we were dating he would change his pronunciation from "water" to "wadder" because waitresses could never understand him.

Another 'wadder' here. I would think it sounded strange for an American to say water with a clearly pronounced 't' It's like Clinton where most people say something like, 'Clin'in.' Not to threadjack so feel free to ignore me, but one that has always bothered me is the word 'comfortable.' I've tried but I just *can't* say anything other than 'comf-ter-bul.' LOL

Wadder here for me too. I have several friends in Philly and Jersey who pronounce it "wood-er".
